The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is currently on in Apia, Samoa with leaders from 55 Commonwealth countries. Members of our Ambulance Operations team are in Samoa, and have been working alongside the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority and the New Zealand Medical Assistance Team to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all attendees. Funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, our deployment has included five ambulances, one 4WD, and several other vehicles, all stocked with medical supplies. Our team also completed key training sessions to prepare for the specific challenges of the event, including Tropical Environment Adaptation, Medical Protocols and Cultural Awareness. This has been a unique opportunity for our team to work alongside other New Zealand and Samoan agencies as we support this important event.

Today is the New Zealand Shake Out Whakahaumaru Aotearoa, our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi. Our Emergency Management Team work with the National Emergency Management Agency (NZ) and many other partners around the motu to prepare for not only earthquakes and tsunami but a range of other emergency situations such as floods, cyclones and landslides. Today our team would like to encourage whānau, workplaces and communities to prepare for a large scale emergency. This could include: 🟨 Preparing supplies to shelter in place, and a go bag ready with food, water, medicines and first aid kit in case you need to leave. Prepare to be self sufficient for at least 3 days, but this could be longer in a major event. 🟨 Having a plan for your whānau, including children and pets. Practice this plan now so everyone knows what to do. 🟨 Know your tsunami evacuation route and if you're near the coast and the shaking is long and strong, get gone. Visit https://getready.govt.nz/ for more information on how to prepare. Information is also available in te reo Maori https://lnkd.in/g69HQmba and New Zealand Sign Language https://lnkd.in/gqsARyPq #ShakeOut #EmergencyManagement #Preparedness #NZ

Today we mark World Restart a Heart Day This year we have partnered with 62 schools around the motu for “Save Your Teddy,” where students will have the opportunity to learn CPR skills and gain confidence around what to do in a cardiac arrest. Building awareness with children today has a big impact as they share their learnings with their whānau and communities. We believe that everyone, regardless of age, can play a crucial role in emergencies. Today is World Mental Health Day and we're spotlighting Carol Johnstone, one of our fantastic Mental Health First Aid tutors. Carol would love to see mental illness become less of a taboo subject, her personal goal when teaching the Mental Health First Aid course is to normalise the language and encourage people to actively start conversations. One of her key methods is to encourage people to draw from lived experiences. She says "I have a person in my life currently living with depression and anxiety. They don’t want me to fix anything when they speak of it, they just want me to listen, and I have found that being patient and being quiet are two very helpful skills." Thank you to Carol and the entire Mental Health First Aid team. 💛 Want to learn more about our Mental Health First Aid courses? A huge congratulations to our Property Services team who won Facilities Management Team of the Year at the FMANZ - Facilities Management Association of New Zealand awards in Auckland recently. 🎉 The Property Services team does a lot of hard work behind-the-scenes here at Hato Hone St John – including property repairs and maintenance, renovations and upgrades, lease management, and compliance and legislation. This is an award that holds great prestige within the property industry and is so well deserved by the small team who manage such a vast and complex property portfolio. Additionally, this is a proud moment for us as a charitable organisation, together with our donors, volunteers, and local communities that contribute so generously to our facilities around the motu. 💛 Well done to everyone for their outstanding mahi! #Property #PropertyAwards #FMANZ #Awards #Facilities #NewZealand

A phone call can make all the difference. Our Caring Caller programme is a free friendship service that creates connections that matter with comfort and companionship through regular phone calls. Val is one of our Caring Callers and describes the programme as peace of mind for clients that someone cares about them. For many of her clients, Val's phone call is a consistent part of their routine and a way to really connect with someone who is interested in their lives and wants to know about their day, making them feel just that bit more valued. 💛 This programme is proudly sponsored by our partner ASB Bank, many ASB staff also volunteer as Caring Callers and they are committed to helping us expand the programme's reach and diversity to better serve our communities. This Mental Health Awareness week we want to spotlight our amazing Peer Support Officers 💛 Our Peer Support Officers give confidential, professional and empathetic support to our people. With their lived experiences and training they are a valuable part of our support and wellbeing systems, providing psychological support to their colleagues. Research tells us the perceived stigma associated with experiencing mental health difficulties or needing support often deters people from seeking help. Our Peer Support Program has been woven into our systems and we have worked to increase the visibility of the team over recent years, with the aim of removing barriers that might hold someone back from receiving support. Thank you to all our Peer Support Officers around the motu for the amazing work you do for the wellbeing of your colleagues 🏆 #Ambulance #EMS #NZ #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MHAW2024

The results from our uniform recycling pilot are in, with 523kg of textile waste saved from going to landfill and 1.8 tonnes of greenhouse gasses prevented from entering the atmosphere 🌏 As part of our commitment to a more sustainable way of working, a uniform recycling trial took place last year over a three month period with strong results. We are now excited to be able to implement this across our whole organisation thanks to some generous supporters. Uniforms entering the circular system will be made into reusable items like acoustic paneling, signage, bags, giftware and much more. A thank you to the team at ImpacTex NZ for showing our team how the recycling process works and some of the great products that will be made from this project” #Sustainability #Recycle #NewZealand #StJohn
