About us
Tonkin + Taylor is New Zealand’s leading environmental and engineering consultancy, with offices across Aotearoa and Australia, employing over 1,000 people. We’re proudly 100% employee owned and operated, and are known for our technical specialists and industry leading engineers, scientists, planners and project managers. We’ve built our business on solid enduring relationships with central and local government, major international donor agencies, commercial organisations, developers, contractors, individuals, and other consultants. Tonkin + Taylor has provided specialist environmental and engineering consulting services since 1959. Our specialist focus is in the fields of geotechnical, civil and water resources engineering, environmental science and resource management. How it all began... Tonkin + Taylor was established as a partnership in Auckland in 1959 by two engineers involved in the construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The company grew steadily as a specialist geotechnical consultancy, developing water resources and specialist civil engineering skills in the 1970s and entering environmental consultancy in the early 1980s. We were involved in New Zealand’s engineering export efforts in the early 1970s and have been operating in Malaysia for over 40 years and the Philippines for approximately 25 years. In 2006 we entered the Australian market and now operate nationally, with offices in Victoria and Queensland. For more information please visit our website: www.tonkintaylor.co.nz

A compass, the lighthouse, and how #climate #disclosures can do more than tick a box. What if they were the by-product of investing in the #sustainable #financial #future of your business? Inspired by so much activity, great thinking and invaluable guidance kindly shared by folks like Chapter Zero New Zealand and Institute of Directors in New Zealand, Sanel Tomlinson and Alec Tang (KPMG), Louise Aitken (Deloitte), amongst others - I've been musing on 18 years of science-grounded #strategic #sustainability work. Finally, the time has arrived. Now it's called #TransitionPlanning and #ScienceBased #engineering solutions have a big role to play. This is a big moment for #SustainabilityLeadership and #SustainableDevelopment. In a short 5-min. article, I've shared thoughts on the compass and lighthouse - critical directional tools to navigate risk and opportunity in practical terms - not through disclosures, but good strategic thinking and investment choices in solutions that work. Take comfort, for this is not entirely new territory. Some companies started the work decades ago. Their experience shows, with the right #mindset and #leadership, the transition to '#zero #footprint' can be done commercially and largely with today's technology. And there are local examples of such leaders. In an era of rising expectations and increasing risks, the path you choose from here will define your/our legacy. We need to get it right, this time. Oh, and there's a suggestion for a Christmas holiday read in there too. A book by a business leader who's actually planned and executed the transition of his global industrial company. Ray Anderson was a genuine leader and well ahead of his time. More than 600 million people worldwide fall ill every year from eating contaminated food, and ensuring food safety is fundamental to food security, enabling better health and improved nutrition across the globe to tackle this alarming number. Shifts for more sustainable food production, to enhance food security and to reduce environmental footprints are seeing circular practices and policies adopted in agrifood systems – which raises an emerging concern about how these circular processes will impact food safety. Exploring this balancing act, Tonkin + Taylor’s Andrew Pearson, Senior Environmental Consultant, recently collaborated with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on a report exploring the evidence of risk to food safety in advancing circular policies in agrifood systems, to outline a way forward to overcome challenges and take advantage of the opportunities to protect and enhance food safety. Futurespace 2024 is where the brightest minds in engineering come together to tackle the future head-on. Starting tomorrow, this event is all about leadership, innovation, and driving change in a rapidly evolving industry. “Why Gen Z Keeps Ghosting Your Phone Calls” - Tamsyn Fenton, Early Careers Advisor, will be speaking on Day 1 about how to effectively engage with the TikTok generation, who value different work qualities and culture than the generations before them. You’ll come away with practical strategies on how to connect with this digitally native workforce. This is a session you don’t want to miss! This year, we're honoured to celebrate the recognition of the SH25A Taparahi Bridge project, which has been named as an award finalist. Completed in partnership with Beca, McConnell Dowell, and Fulton Hogan, this critical project restored vital transport links after the 2023 Coromandel weather events, setting a new standard for rapid infrastructure recovery. We're also proud to have two of our own Tonkin + Taylor professionals being recognised for their outstanding contributions to the field: - Emerging Leader Award Finalist: Dilys Fong, Transport Planner and Engineer. The judges recognised Dilys for her passion for achieving wider outcomes for communities, which comes from a deep commitment to her work in diversity, engagement, and climate change adaptation. - ACE New Zealand Futurespace Award Finalist: Cole Brown, Engineering Geologist. The judges highlighted Cole’s expertise leading the development of Tonkin + Taylor’s groundbreaking Site Search platform. They also noted his leadership in integrating digital solutions, and his strong technical focus with ability to motivate teams. Congratulations to Alex Keyte Beattie for winning the Young Professionals Scholarship from the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia! Alex, a Senior Environmental Consultant in our Melbourne office, is presenting at the Australian Resource Recovery Conference in Adelaide, which begins today. Her presentation, "Resource Recovery in Remote Locations: Lessons from the Pacific," draws on Tonkin + Taylor’s work across Pacific Islands such as the Marshall Islands, Chatham Islands, Niue, and the Federated States of Micronesia. Alex's research offers valuable insights into how remote communities can achieve sustainable resource recovery through pragmatic approaches. By leveraging local resources, building community capacity, and adapting solutions to unique needs, we're helping to create a more circular economy in some of the world's most challenging environments. For those attending the conference, we encourage you to attend her session tomorrow at 11:40am during the Regional and Remote Session. Please join us in celebrating Alex's achievement and her commitment to sustainable resource management!
