United Machinists precision engineer critical components for high tech manufacturers.
About us
United Machinists precision engineer critical components for high tech manufacturers. Founded in 1977 by Doug Ramsay, United Machinists has a long history servicing leading New Zealand manufacturers including local stalwarts such as Fisher & Paykel and Scott Technology. Today, owned by the next generation of Ramsays, we continue with tradition, proudly serving clients across the aerospace, medical, mining and marine industries – we like to say we ‘machine possibilities’. Our vision is to be the machine shop of the future, working in partnership with New Zealand’s leading product innovators. To achieve this we are undergoing a transformation – investing heavily in new capabilities, plant and machinery. In our game precision is a given, to differentiate ourselves we have raised the bar of what’s expected from your average ‘job shop’. Our clients tell us that our documentation, real time visibility of schedule and proactive communication are outstanding. Despite our minnow size, because of our attitude we’ve become leaders for industry in the Southern region. We are the co-founders of industry collective SOREC (www.sorec.org.nz). SOREC’s focus is to build the industry’s capability and capacity, so that we can collectively attract more work to the region. Our Country is seen as an incubator of high-tech ideas, but without a manufacturing backbone that’s sustainable all of these ideas are going to go offshore for production. What does that mean for the future of work? Not everyone is born to be a programmer, we want youth in our community to have taking up the trade as a career goal. Because who wouldn’t want to make camera gear for the set of X-Men in Canada, propulsion jet units for the Yukon Delta, or life changing multi-articulating prosthetic hands. The craft in our trade is inspiring, but our workforce is dying – we must change the narrative from one that says there is no future in manufacturing, to one where high tech manufacturing is the future of NZ.

Whooo hoo - next month for United Machinists will be Silver Sponsors at the upcoming Aerospace New Zealand Summit. We'll have lots of tricky pieces on display to showcase our capabilities, as well as some behind the scenes footage of our people and technology in action. Our CEO Sarah Ramsay will also be a panel speaker about manufacturing for Space. CNC machining for aerospace is so much more than just machining a part - having world class CNC machines is simply permission to play. A company needs to create a culture of care and quality, integrate software to automate workflows for such high mix production and to ensure traceability is seamlessly efficient and available at the click of a button in perpetuity. Most importantly given the low volume but mission critical nature of the space industry, we must have real time visibility of our schedule and a relentless focus on continuous improvement that drives DIFOTIS - 'delivery in full on-time in specification'. Just wrapped up a fantastic few days at EMEX exhibition! Despite my initial plans to share daily posts and photos, I found myself fully immersed with clients, prospective clients 🤞, suppliers, friends, and industry peers. Key takeaways from the event: - Emphasizing process innovation over large equipment is the current trend, with a focus on maximizing existing assets. Exciting advancements in robot automation, digital solutions, sustainable practices, logistics, and 3D printing are paving the way for future productivity gains. - The trend towards global expansion is evident, with more companies exploring export opportunities and collaboration within the industry supply chain. - Discussions around talent development highlighted challenges in attracting young talent but also showcased a growing interest among students and apprentices in the manufacturing sector. Great to meet so many apprentices walking around the show! - Despite market challenges, there is a sense of optimism for the future, especially with the newfound focus on manufacturing by the government. Excellent to show our first ever Minister for Manufacturing Andrew Bayly around the show. - Gender diversity remains a crucial topic, with efforts needed to increase female representation in manufacturing roles and leadership positions. Grateful for the support from organizations like Callaghan Innovation New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council , EMA, Advanced Manufacturing Aotearoa in championing the advancement of manufacturing at EMEX exhibition

Every fortnight our CEO Sarah Ramsay has a column in the Otago Daily Times. This week she took to her keyboard to call for better policy across all of Government to support manufacturers. 💥
Manufacturing accounts for 12% of NZ’s total workforce, 10% of GDP and a whopping 60% of our exports. It’s not a sector in itself though, but a function across all of our key export sectors – from food & beverage, to medical devices and even putting rockets into space. More investment in manufacturing process innovation is a huge piece of NZ’s productivity puzzle. But it’s not as simple as plugging in a robot, we’ve got a huge talent gap which is largely driven by outdated perceptions of the industry. We need a sector perceived as aspirational to attract people, people to innovate and innovation to drive capital investment. It’s time to change the narrative of manufacturing in NZ to recognize how much value we add, and how much more value could be added. Having our first Minister for Manufacturing Andrew Bayly is an important step towards this. As the Chair of the Minister's Manufacturing Productivity Advisory Group I’m excited to work alongside 30+ other manufacturing business leaders to help shape better policy and a vision for NZ’s manufacturing future. Huge thanks to some of those involved so far!: Catherine Lye Fiona Bycroft Ash Nicholson Mat R. NEW YEAR - NEW YOU? We're hiring an Administration Manager. Due to an internal promotion in 2023 we have created a new position as Administration Manager. This role is within our senior leadership team, directly supporting our CEO. United has a small and mighty team in need of someone who can help glue together the various administrative functions across the business. Your role will be to help everyone go faster as you get stuff done and improve processes across IT, compliance, HR, planning, operations, finance and business development. (just to name a few 😉 ) No two days will be the same and you'll enjoy an autonomous role, face-paced and at times high pressure work environment, along with lots of banter. Most importantly you'll buy into the bigger picture - with a positive attitude you're passionate and curious about advancing manufacturing in NZ and joining a company helping to manufacture world leading technology. https://lnkd.in/eQdk4KBQ
