Founded in 1977 by Doug Ramsay, United Machinists has a long history servicing leading New Zealand manufacturers including local stalwarts such as Fisher & Paykel and Scott Technology. Today, owned by the next generation of Ramsays, we continue with tradition, proudly serving clients across the aerospace, medical, mining and marine industries – we like to say we ‘machine possibilities’. Our vision is to be the machine shop of the future, working in partnership with New Zealand’s leading product innovators. To achieve this we are undergoing a transformation – investing heavily in new capabilities, plant and machinery. In our game precision is a given, to differentiate ourselves we have raised the bar of what’s expected from your average ‘job shop’. Just wrapped up a fantastic few days at EMEX exhibition! Despite my initial plans to share daily posts and photos, I found myself fully immersed with clients, prospective clients 🤞, suppliers, friends, and industry peers. Key takeaways from the event: - Emphasizing process innovation over large equipment is the current trend, with a focus on maximizing existing assets. Exciting advancements in robot automation, digital solutions, sustainable practices, logistics, and 3D printing are paving the way for future productivity gains. - The trend towards global expansion is evident, with more companies exploring export opportunities and collaboration within the industry supply chain. - Discussions around talent development highlighted challenges in attracting young talent but also showcased a growing interest among students and apprentices in the manufacturing sector. Great to meet so many apprentices walking around the show! - Despite market challenges, there is a sense of optimism for the future, especially with the newfound focus on manufacturing by the government. Excellent to show our first ever Minister for Manufacturing Andrew Bayly around the show. - Gender diversity remains a crucial topic, with efforts needed to increase female representation in manufacturing roles and leadership positions. Every fortnight our CEO Sarah Ramsay has a column in the Otago Daily Times. This week she took to her keyboard to call for better policy across all of Government to support manufacturers. 💥
Manufacturing accounts for 12% of NZ’s total workforce, 10% of GDP and a whopping 60% of our exports. It’s not a sector in itself though, but a function across all of our key export sectors – from food & beverage, to medical devices and even putting rockets into space. More investment in manufacturing process innovation is a huge piece of NZ’s productivity puzzle. But it’s not as simple as plugging in a robot, we’ve got a huge talent gap which is largely driven by outdated perceptions of the industry. We need a sector perceived as aspirational to attract people, people to innovate and innovation to drive capital investment. It’s time to change the narrative of manufacturing in NZ to recognize how much value we add, and how much more value could be added. Having our first Minister for Manufacturing Andrew Bayly is an important step towards this. As the Chair of the Minister's Manufacturing Productivity Advisory Group I’m excited to work alongside 30+ other manufacturing business leaders to help shape better policy and a vision for NZ’s manufacturing future. United has a small and mighty team in need of someone who can help glue together the various administrative functions across the business.
