Happy World Day for Glaciers! 🏔️   To mark the day, UNDP Pakistan, in collaboration with Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, launched Pakistan’s Glacier Conservation Strategy — a crucial step in protecting these vital ice reserves. The event featured:  🎙️ A panel discussion on glacier protection & climate resilience 🏡 A demonstration of Glof II Pakistan’s Early Warning Systems to safeguard communities   Pakistan is home to 13,032 glaciers. With rising temperatures, however, they’re melting fast — forming 3,044 glacial lakes and putting communities at risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and other climate disasters.   Protecting glaciers ▶️ Protecting life.   #ClimateAction #GlacierProtection

Pakistan’s glaciers are melting at an alarming rate. 🏔️ With 13,000+ glaciers, the country depends on glacial runoff for water, food & energy. But climate change is accelerating glacial retreat, increasing the risk of floods, water shortages & food insecurity. In Ghundus Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, women & girls are most affected — many walking miles to fetch water, forcing them to leave school. Since 2021, Glof II Pakistan has rehabilitated irrigation channels, securing access to water & education for girls. Because water security ▶️ education security — every drop now fuels hope, opportunity & resilience. Building resilience, transforming lives! Floods in 2022 left thousands homeless in Balochistan. With generous support from the Government of Germany through KfW and in collaboration with Economic Affairs Division, Government of Pakistan, Ministry of Planning Development and Special Initiatives and Government of Balochistan, #UNDPinPakistan is catalyzing recovery by reconstructing houses for the flood affectees in Quetta district. 40 disaster and climate-resilient homes handed over to the beneficiaries — 760 more to come! Thousands of people are benefiting from this crucial step towards sustainable recovery & long-term resilience.
