Andreia Figueiredo (group leader of the Grapevine Pathogen Systems Lab), Jorge Marques da Silva, @Ana Rita Matos and Anabela Bernardes da Silva (respectively, group leader and researchers of the Environmental and Molecular Plant Physiology Lab) participate in a project aiming to prospect marine microorganisms that may have a biostimulant effect for salt marsh vegetation, allowing to restore these ecosystems. Headed by @Bernardo Duarte, researcher from MARE - Centro de Ciências do Mar e do Ambiente, the µRestart will bring together BioISI, CE3C - Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes and MARE researchers (all from Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa) and benefit from their combined expertise to achieve its goal. The amount assigned to this project totals ~500 k€ and is funded within the MAR2030 framework programme. Know more 👉 https://bioisi.pt/news/84 #bioisinews #ScienceGoals #scienceachievements

We can compare the different types of grapes used to produce a certain wine with a box of crayons 🖍 Now imagine that the produced wine is a picture drawn with those crayons. We can say that the authors of this paper developed a methodology that allow to figure out what specific crayons were used to paint the draw even if the colors are all mixed up. Got curious? Imagine you have tiny building blocks (proteins) that sometimes stick together in a way that isn't good and can make your brain not work well. In this work, researchers found that when calcium is around, these blocks stick together in a different way, making possible to our brain not to become sick (Alzheimer’s Disease). Know more about this work here: https://bioisi.pt/news/83 Read the full paper, first-authored by Ana Carapeto, researcher from the Atomic Force Microscopy and Related Techniques Lab (at BioISI - Biosystems & Integrative Sciences Institute - Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa ), coordinated by Mário Rodrigues (group leader of the same lab), counting with the participation of Patrícia Faísca (group leader of the Biological Physics Lab) and published on Biomolecules journal here: https://bit.ly/47cBx1L #BioISiDigest #alzheimersdisease #AtomicForceMicroscopy #ProteinAggregation

Gabriel Martins, PhD Student at the Molecular Aggregation in Disease Lab (BioISI - Biosystems & Integrative Sciences Institute - Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa), is the first author of a recent paper, published in the Journal of Chemical Information and Modelling (American Chemical Society) and coordinated by Nuno Galamba, group leader of the same Lab. In this study, the authors used two different simulation methods to study the aggregation of alpha-synuclein, a intrinsically disordered protein implicated in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Read this BioISI Digest to find out more about this investigation, which will make possible to study that protein and better understand its aggregation, so that new drug candidates to PD can be developed: https://bioisi.pt/news/81 Read the full paper: https://bit.ly/3XHeSHT #bioisidigest #MolecularSimulation #ComputationalChemistry #parkinsonsdisease

A recent paper, first-authored by Fernanda Murtinheira, PhD Student from the Cell Structure and Dynamics Lab, at BioISI - Biosystems & Integrative Sciences Institute - Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, and coordinated by Federico Herrera, principal investigator of the same lab, reports the development of a cellular model for the rare neurological disorder Autosomal Recessive Spastic Ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS). According to Federico Herrera, these findings will have a great positive impact for patients and their families as: "The molecular mechanisms of rare neurodegenerative disorders like ARSACS are poorly understood, and there are no treatments. Big pharma and large research laboratories are not very interested because the number of potential customers is very limited. And yet, these disorders represent a burden for many families and a major scientific challenge for academic laboratories like mine."
