Rainfall-induced floods are becoming increasingly frequent and severe across Europe, posing significant risks to critical infrastructure. These extreme events disrupt public services, cause billions in damages and expose vulnerabilities in systems designed for a less volatile climate. A Sweco report highlights how cities can strengthen resilience against flooding and its cascading effects on critical infrastructure. By integrating national and sector-specific risk assessments with urban planning, cities can proactively address these challenges. The report outlines a seven-step approach, from identifying at-risk assets to implementing protective measures and monitoring progress. Sweco has been awarded contracts to provide architecture and engineering services for two major hospital projects in Germany. The projects include building a new parent-child medical care centre at the University Medical Center Göttingen and expanding and refurbishing the Martha-Maria Hospital in Nuremberg. These wins are further proof of Sweco's expertise in designing and optimising healthcare facilities. “We look forward to supporting our clients in creating state-of-the-art medical facilities with modern and innovative architectural solutions. Sweco’s team brings extensive experience in planning, designing and managing healthcare construction projects to meet the highest standards,” says Julia Zantke, Business Area President for Sweco in Germany. Founded in 1732, the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) is one of Germany’s largest university hospitals, comprising more than 1,600 beds and 40 specialist clinical departments. As part of its redevelopment strategy, UMG is constructing a parent-child centre to enable future-oriented medical care for mother and child. In 2024, the Martha-Maria Hospital in Nuremberg and St. Theresienkrankenhaus, two teaching hospitals of Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, merged to enhance their healthcare services. This requires a major redevelopment and expansion of the Martha-Maria site, consolidating all inpatient units into a modern facility with 470 beds. Regenerative design can increase urban green-blue areas in European cities by 42 percent. A new report by Sweco highlights the potential of 22 European cities to enhance liveability, sustainability, and resilience through regenerative design in the built environment. By adopting the principles of regenerative design, these cities can increase the size of their green-blue areas by 42 percent – and align with the new EU nature restoration law related to urban ecosystems.   Sweco's experts have identified nine key elements of regenerative neighbourhoods.   Read more: https://lnkd.in/d4p5bdnq

As the global population ages, the need for thoughtful, inclusive design is more critical than ever. By 2050, nearly a quarter of the world is expected to be aged 60 or older and the built environment must evolve to meet this demographic shift. At Sweco, we’re actively involved in creating spaces that foster intergenerational connections, sustainability and community engagement. Two of our Danish projects exemplify this vision: ➡️ Gauerslund Community Centre integrates a nursing home and daycare into a single vibrant hub. This innovative design promotes daily interactions across generations with shared activity spaces, outdoor playfields and even a mini zoo. Aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, it’s a shining example of inclusive, eco-conscious public architecture. ➡️ The House of Generations redefines urban living in Aarhus Docklands. By combining homes for youth, families and seniors with community spaces like cafes and daycare, it encourages meaningful connections across age groups while meeting diverse residential needs.
