As the World Architecture Festival draws to a close, we’re proud to have been part of such an inspiring gathering and to sponsor this year’s Student Charrette. Congratulations to the student team from Queen's University Belfast on their innovative winning project, Staging Symbiosis: Seaweed+ The winning team’s project focuses on Rathlin Island, situated six miles off Northern Ireland’s coast and home to 141 people, 653 sheep and 250,000 seabirds. The proposal imagines a sustainable future for the island, utilising seaweed—one of Rathlin’s most abundant natural resources. Broadway Malyan’s Director of Masterplanning, Ash Gupta, was recently interviewed by Neil Halligan of AGBI - Arabian Gulf Business Insight about Muscat's ambitious development plans for the future. The World Architecture Festival Student Charrette, supported by Broadway Malyan, officially started, with Brahmono Aji attending the student briefing led by paul finch. Eight student teams have been invited to identify a building, place, neighbourhood or landscape which would benefit from a radical intervention to improve (a) its condition and (b) its potential to accommodate new uses, ideas or technologies. The World Architecture Festival is kicking off this week, and we are honoured to have two projects shortlisted in the 2024 Awards. Shortlisted in the Retail Inside Interiors category, Banco BPI All In One is a new banking experience that brings together various service elements into a unique space that is both functional and experiential. The All In One concept creates spaces and installations that support the highest levels of customer care and exceptional service, while also asserting themselves to create a user experience and journey that is surprising, captivating and unforgettable. The Surabaya Urban Transformation Project, also known as Dolly, has been awarded the WAFX 24 prize for Ethics and Values and shortlisted in the Experimental Future Projects category. The Putat Jaya area of Surabaya, Indonesia, was once home to Southeast Asia’s largest red-light district. The project has developed a transformational blueprint for a vibrant, equitable and sustainable district, setting a new benchmark for kampungs across Indonesia. #WAF24 #INSIDE24

Over the next month, we will explore the sustainability stories behind several recent projects, beginning with Sarda House, a stunning new family home in the western Indian city of Nashik. Inspired by the concept of togetherness, this multi-generational residence features a series of visually connected yet distinct spaces that enhance family interaction and promote harmonious living. Sustainable living was central to the design brief, focusing on creating a fully ventilated home that utilises locally sourced materials, generates renewable energy on-site, preserves the natural landscape and incorporates technology to automate essential household functions.
