Refresh » Repurpose » Reimagine Over 80% of the buildings that will be standing by 2050 have already been built, so we need to focus on retrofitting these existing structures if we’re to achieve net zero by the same year. Having worked on various scales of retrofit across multiple sectors, we know there are no cookie-cutter solutions. Therefore, we categorise the scope of works required for any given project using our sliding scale of intervention. Head of Sustainability Oliver Hall outlines our approach to retrofit by revisiting some of our favourite case studies: https://lnkd.in/etFFTcNP #retrofit #makeneutral #sustainabledesign #makearchitects

How can we design public spaces that allow for healthy solitude in the city? Makers Katy Ghahremani and Peter Greaves share their thoughts with Francesca Specter in The New York Times, which also showcases Poets’ Park: a pocket park we designed within our 80 Charlotte Street scheme for client Derwent London. Curating spaces that increase opportunities for social interaction may have the unintended consequence of making isolated people feel even more marginalised, whereas spaces that support solitary experiences in the midst of a crowd may encourage a feeling of belonging. Designing for variety is, therefore, crucial to reflect the diverse needs of the people who use them, and spaces like Poets’ Park offer a sense of seclusion despite its central urban location. #WorldBuildingOfTheWeek - New Bailey is part of The English Cities Fund's transformation of central Salford, part of Greater Manchester. For its third building at New Bailey, Make Architects created a standout: Eden, an office building covered in a living wall. WA: What makes this project unique? MA: Eden’s stand-out feature is its living wall, which is the largest of its kind in Europe and brings significant urban greening to Salford. Designed in collaboration with green wall specialists Viritopia (formerly ANS Global), the living wall’s 350,000 plants were grown at Viritopia’s nursery in Chichester, West Sussex. WA: What is the inspiration behind the design of the building? MA: We knew from the outset that we wanted to do something a bit different, having designed two other distinctive buildings for the masterplan (Four New Bailey and Three New Bailey). The idea to include a green wall was conceived during Covid-19 lockdowns, when we were all craving closer connections with nature. We looked at precedent case studies, such as London Wall Place, and we thought a green wall could work in Salford. We’re thrilled to announce the completion of Worship Square, a new commercial space located in the heart of Shoreditch, London. The state-of-the-art building, spanning eight floors and 13,000 square meters of leasable space, is already set to be fully occupied on opening. We collaborated with jmarchitects and Make Architects to deliver Worship Square, one of the most sustainable buildings to date from HB Reavis UK. From the outset, it aimed for embodied carbon targets more than 50% lower than the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) 2020 baseline and 18% lower than the 2030 GLA aspirational benchmark. Buro Happold was engaged from stage four of the project, developing building services engineering and sustainability consultancy to ensure the project achieved its ambitious targets. Energy-efficient elements such as air source heat pumps, onsite photovoltaics, and a high-performance façade ensure optimal environmental conditions. Smart technology manages everything from meeting room bookings to air quality, making it easy for occupiers to operate efficiently. Worship Square also prioritises wellbeing and community with over 4,500 sq. ft. of private and communal roof terraces, a fitness studio, app-controlled concierge service, and more. Piotr Korwin-Piotrowski, Director, Buro Happold, said "Navigating the Worship Square project during the pandemic was both an incredible and challenging journey. Despite never meeting in person, the MEP and Sustainability design teams at Buro Happold collaborated seamlessly with HB Reavis and other design teams, showcasing the power of remote teamwork. Together, we have realised a unique project that is a testament to our resilience and innovation to the constantly evolving market expectations." Congratulations to everyone involved in this visionary project that has set a new benchmark for sustainable workspace. Adelaide Marriott Hotel finally opened its doors to the public today as Marriott Hotels' first in South Australia! 💫 Formerly the historic General Post Office (GPO) building, we were honoured to design and deliver a full turnkey interior concept for a signature restaurant, now known as 'Penny Blue', which emphasises the rich architectural detailing still present in the spaces today. Our concept is oriented around the preparation and display of dishes – a play on the weighing of postage parcels that took place here in the past. A sensitive intervention, our design respects the original heritage, materiality and detailing of one of Australia’s few remaining GPOs to deliver a new F&B destination for clients Marriot Hotels and Greaton Development. 🔗Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eJvrruWf #adelaidemarriott #adelaidegpo #hospitalitydesign #restaurantinteriors #makearchitects Michelle Evans | Simon Lincoln | James Chase | Lucy Feast | Tom Ayers | Griffen Lim
