About us

The National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) was set up to strengthen Singapore’s capabilities in infectious disease management and prevention and is a national leader and a regional and global player in infectious diseases. Our mission is to protect the people of Singapore from infectious diseases. NCID houses clinical services, the National Public Health and Epidemiology Unit, the National Public Health Laboratory, the Infectious Disease Research and Training Office, the Antimicrobial Resistance Coordinating Office, and oversees national programmes of two major diseases of public health importance – HIV and Tuberculosis. Benchmarked to international standards and best practices for treatment and safety, we are a unique organisation poised to streamline infectious disease management and will better enhance Singapore’s ability to respond effectively to infectious outbreaks.

The top 100,000 scientists by c-score or a percentile rank of two per cent or above in the sub-field according to the standard Science-Metrix classification were selected based on the citations received in a calendar year.   • NCID organised its first Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) Tier 1.5 Virtual Workshop in collaboration with GOARN - Global Outbreak Alert and Response NetworkWorld Health Organization (WHO) on 15 and 16 August 2024. The workshop aimed to prepare potential deployees with relevant knowledge and skills for outbreak deployment with the GOARN.   The workshop was facilitated by Dr Darius Beh and Dr Margaret Soon from NCID who had experience in an overseas deployment under GOARN. In addition, NCID speakers – Dr Shawn Vasoo, A/Prof Lim Poh Lian and A/Prof Steven Ooi, and overseas speakers – Dr Renee Christensen, Dr Samuel Boland and Dr Aina Garstang were invited to share their expertise and deployment experiences.   The workshop attracted participants from both GOARN and non-GOARN partner institutions including NCID, Tan Tock Seng HospitalMinistry of Health (Singapore) and other local and overseas institutions. The participants gained an understanding of the practical skills and knowledge required for deployment in a global outbreak mission under GOARN and WHO. Participants also learned the latest information regarding outbreak management and response in health emergencies related to infectious diseases.   • Congratulations to Ms Tan Wei Qi for receiving the Nurses’ Merit Award 2024! Wei Qi is an Assistant Nurse Clinician at NCID’s Outbreak Intensive Care Unit, and her primary responsibility is providing care for infectious disease patients who are critically ill. Although her experience is in critical care nursing, she is also trained in managing high-consequence pathogens, and conducts trainings for her peers to improve their collective response to novel pathogens. National Healthcare Group nurses are trusted and chosen to provide expert advice, decisions, and care. Being one of the NHG nurses receiving the award, Wei Qi is grateful for the recognition, “I am glad that I can make a difference in the lives of my patients, and I am truly honoured to receive the Nurses’ Merit Award.
