Just came back from COP16 Colombia where I had the privilege to share Silverstrand Capital's work in supporting and accelerating nature and biodiversity positive businesses, connect with friends and partners like Callum Douglas, María Carolina Suarez Visbal from Latimpacto and meet new friends like Taciano Custodio from Rabobank Brasil and Camila Silva Arango from Finance in Motion. 😆I had my first ever panel in Spanish at the NaturaTech LAC "Accelerating Innovation for Nature" organized by Constanza Gomez Mont from C Minds, moderated by my fellow mission driven friend Camilo Santa from the Inter-American Development Bank. 🙏I was humbled to have been invited to the session organized by Allison Voss from the World Economic Forum at the Colombian Pavillion on “Nature Innovation: Catalyzing Entrepreneurial Solutions for Biodiversity and People” and shared the stage with Mariana Sarmiento from Terrasos, a long-time pioneer of biodiversity habitat banks in Latin America. 🤝I was delighted to have facilitated the Community and Networking Lounge session on “Investing in Nature positive tech” at Bloom 24 together with Hiba Larsson from NatureFinance and Barbara Dubach from Innovate 4 Nature. 🎉I was thrilled by the great turnout we had at the Finance for Biodiversity Pavilion session on “Enabling the ecosystem for Nature Positive Ventures” moderated by Tom Quigley from Superorganism and proud of showcasing some of this year’s Biodiversity Accelerator+ companies including Ocean Ledger, Veridi Technologies BV, 3T, and Dunya Analytics. While the negotiations at the intergovernmental level have been delayed and tangible solutions to finance the Global Biodiversity Framework targets are less clear, I am encouraged, inspired, and committed to do more for nature and biodiversity. We’ll be at COP16 this year - will we see you there? The UN Biodiversity Conference presents a crucial opportunity to address the large-scale degradation to nature and biodiversity. This year’s COP16, themed ‘Peace with Nature’, will be the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework, and will focus on implementation and translating of frameworks into actionable plans. In the lead up to the Finance and Biodiversity Day at COP16, we are excited to be representing Singapore by hosting a session on ‘Enabling the Ecosystem for Nature Positive Ventures’ at the Finance for Biodiversity Pavilion.  We invite all who are attending COP16 to join us in-person at the session with our panel of speakers featuring our Head of Impact, Patti Chu, Tom Quigley (Superorganism), Barbara Dubach (Innovate 4 Nature), Allison Voss (World Economic Forum), and Constanza Gomez (NaturaTech LAC), who will shed light on the roles that investors and ecosystem enablers including accelerators, incubators and innovation challenges, play in supporting early stage nature tech ventures for scale. We kicked off the online programme with experts in nature tech & policy – now, we’re diving deep with our knowledge partners into the financing portion of the startup equation: 💡 Li Li from BASF Venture Capital GmbH shared valuable insights into the investment strategy of Corporate Venture Capital (CVC). BASF, one of the world's largest petrochemical producers, has diverse product portfolios in Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, Surface Technologies, Nutrition & Care, and Agricultural Solutions. The company proactively seeks solutions that synergize with its offerings to enhance customer value and competitiveness via its CVC arm. Our engaging discussion explored how CVCs can support their startup portfolios beyond mere financing. In BVC’s case, such potential includes areas such as concept validation, product development, corporate governance, customer access and more. We also examined how CVCs balance their existing capabilities with emerging disruptive technologies and how startups can effectively navigate the complex dynamics of relationships with CVCs and their mother companies. 💡 Diarmuid McGann from Wedgetail Ventures explained how the fund deploys a blend of nature-linked loans, large and small grants and equity investments into projects at the intersection of nature, business and people with the mission to conserve and restore biodiversity. “We co-create biodiversity plans with our project partners, which include clear nature milestones that can unlock interest rate reductions. We’ve found this approach helps our partners move biodiversity measurement and action up on their priority lists, and that once they've done this work, it results in benefits such as premium prices. This collaborative process has been important in ensuring incentive alignment while also addressing the biodiversity financing gap.
