    Commitment to #TransformFreetown

I was humbled and honored to receive the 2024 German Africa Award from Bärbel Bas, President of the Bundestag, Germany's Parliament, during an uplifting and beautiful ceremony in Berlin this evening. The German Africa Foundation has since 1993, annually honored one individual from Africa who is considered to have made exceptional contributions to democracy, peace, human rights, sustainable development, research, arts, culture, or societal progress on the continent. The selection of the award winner is done by an independent panel of 20 members and over two dozen candidates were considered for the 2024 award. I was awarded in recognition of my efforts towards sustainable urban development, exemplified by interventions such as the digitization of property rates, the planting and growing of 1m trees, the establishment of Freetown’s first wastewater treatment plant with circular economy benefits and an inclusive community engagement approach to governance . As the 2024 German Africa Award winner, I yesterday met with Svenja Schulze, the German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Katja Kaul, Minister of State for the German Federal Foreign Office, the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development as well as representatives of German business associations. Accompanied by Cllr Zainab Conteh, we had very productive and engaging discussions which covered the challenges of rapid urbanization, climate adaptation, the recently conducted feasibility studies for the Freetown Cable Car and job creation opportunities. I am excited about taking forward these conversations in order to harness additional support for our Transform Freetown - Transforming Lives Development Agenda! I dedicate the 2024 German Africa Award to my teams, to our partners and to the residents of Freetown. This award is a recognition of our shared commitment and collective efforts to #TransformFreetown and #TransformLives. Thank you.

  • Decrease in Maternal Deaths at Gbalamuya Health Post   Imagine a pregnant woman facing severe complications, but the nearest healthcare facility is hours away, making timely treatment impossible. This is the reality for many women in Sierra Leone, where maternal deaths remain a critical issue, with the country having one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Without timely intervention and proper care, complications often go untreated, leading to preventable deaths. The GIZ project Health System Strengthening and Epidemic Prevention (HSSEPIII) and the Kambia district reduced maternal deaths from over 50 per year to around 25 through intensive training and upgraded medical equipment such as delivery kits. The nurses Kadie and Angela and their extensive efforts are prime examples of the projects’ impact on improved maternal care, here at the Gbalamuya Health Post. By enhancing skills in Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) and enabling up to 8 antenatal visits per pregnancy, the Health Post now offers early diagnoses and a more personalized approach. The project Health System Strengthening and Epidemic Prevention (HSSEP III) is commissioned by the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) #GIZinSierraLeone #HSSEP #CommunityEmpowerment #SierraLeone #PublicHealth #MaternalMortality #BEmONC

  • Kadiatie, a single mother of three has increase the yield of her coconut farm from 25 kg to 225 kg. This enables her to feed her children, send them to school, one of them is even attending Freetown Polytechnic College. Kadiatie was a beneficiary of the Employment Promotion Program (EPP) over the past 5-years. Her 4-hectare coconut farm was rehabilitated, replanted, and expanded to 6 hectares.     Sierra Leone faces high levels of unemployment, especially in rural areas, where access to resources and modern farming techniques is limited. Many smallholder farmers struggle to support their families due to low agricultural yields. This is where EPP steps in, providing training and resources to boost productivity and improve livelihoods to people like Kadiatie.    The Employment Promotion Programme (EPPIV) is commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung and cofinanced by the European Union in Sierra Leone.   #gizsierraleone #sustainabledevelopment #GenderEquality #SierraLeone #germanyinsalone

  • In rural areas of Sierra Leone, accessing medical care has long been a challenge, with many communities relying on traditional medicine and facing a severe shortage of healthcare workers. This left thousands without essential medical services, particularly in remote regions like Kambia District, making a reliable presence of health workers in these areas a persistent issue. To address this, the project Health System Strengthening and Epidemic Prevention (HSSEPIII) supported the development of the Rural Retention Plan, designed to ensure the consistent deployment of healthcare professionals in rural communities.     Nurse Kadie, one of these dedicated health workers, now provides vital medical support to over 4,959 people across 16 catchment villages in Kambia. To further deepen the impact of medical personnel in rural areas, the project also established Facility Management Committees (FMCs). These FMCs bridge the gap between health facilities and local communities, promoting trust, ownership, and participation in healthcare services, through the provision of board and lodging for the medical personnel posted in the communities.    👉 As a result of these interventions, health workers like Nurse Kadie are now posted for six years, ensuring ongoing care and helping to transform access to health services in previously underserved areas.    The project Health System Strengthening and Epidemic Prevention (HSSEP III) is commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ)#GIZinSierraLeone #HSSEP #CommunityEmpowerment #SierraLeone #PublicHealth

  • Musa Tarawally is a prime example of the successful collaboration between GIZ and local farmers in Sierra Leone, where the agriculture sector faces numerous challenges in productivity and the resulting socio-economic status of rural communities. Through the outreach of our Employment Promotion Program (EPPIV), Musa enhanced his farming capabilities due to intensive trainings and the provision of farming material.   The results were impressive, since Musa expanded his farm from 2,5 to 4,5 hectars, and, more importantly, his annual harvest increased from 90kgs to 600kgs. He invested his increased income in another business: a phone charging center, powered by 5 solar panels in a hard-to-reach community where energy is scarce. His successful businesses established him as an important local employer, with 111 day-laborers at his farm and one full-time employee in his charging center.   EPPIV is commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development / Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) and cofinanced by the European Commission.   #GIZinSierraLeone #SustainableDevelopment #EPP #SierraLeone #GermanyinSalone #EuropeanUnion

  • 💡 In a country, where access to clean and reliable energy remains a daily challenge for many, we're thrilled to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Renewable Energy Association of Sierra Leone (REASL). This marks a significant step forward in our Energising Development (EnDev) project, aimed at improving Sierra Leone's energy sector with environmentally friendly solutions. The MoU sets the stage for impactful initiatives, including providing financial support and capacity-building for REASL members, bridging technical skills gaps in the renewable energy sector and creating an enabling environment for financial opportunities and supporting the standardization of renewable energy products in Sierra Leone. 📢 We believe that together, we can pave the way for a sustainable energy future in Sierra Leone. As a member of the signing process shares: "We are enthusiastic about the potential for significant advancements in the Sierra Leone energy sector." EnDev is a multi-donor partnership consisting of Germany and the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development / Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), the Netherlands, Norway, and Switzerland.
