African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA)

Plus tôt cette semaine, l'Alliance des leaders africains contre le paludisme (ALMA) s'est associée au ministère de la Santé de la Gambie pour organiser une formation destinée à l'Assemblée nationale de la santé de Gambie sur l'utilisation du tableau de bord des MTN (Maladies Tropicales Négligées) pour le plaidoyer, la responsabilité et l'action. La session a mis en lumière l'état actuel des maladies tropicales négligées (MTN) en Gambie, avec des informations du ministère de la Santé sur les opportunités et les défis à relever pour faire progresser l'agenda d'élimination des MTN. Les participants, dont des parlementaires clés, ont acquis une expérience pratique du tableau de bord des MTN et de la manière de l’utiliser pour promouvoir un plaidoyer et des engagements fondés sur les données. Des représentants du ministère de la Santé, du CDC Afrique et des coordinateurs du programme MTN ont rejoint plus de 40 membres de l'Assemblée nationale de la santé pour la formation. Les présidents de comités et les députés se sont engagés à plaider pour une augmentation des financements alloués aux MTN et à intégrer les priorités des MTN dans le budget national, garantissant ainsi une approche plus solide et durable pour le contrôle et l'élimination de ces maladies. À travers l'Afrique, de nombreux programmes de lutte contre les MTN manquent de financements adéquats pour mettre en œuvre pleinement les interventions. C'est pourquoi ces initiatives, qui renforcent les capacités des législateurs à mobiliser des fonds nationaux pour les #MTN, sont essentielles pour favoriser les efforts de contrôle et d'élimination de ces maladies.

Earlier this week, the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) partnered with the Ministry of Health of the Gambia to deliver a training for the Gambia National Health Assembly on the use of the NTD scorecard for advocacy, accountability, and action. The session highlighted the current state of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in the Gambia, with insights from the Ministry of Health on both the opportunities and challenges in driving forward the NTD elimination agenda. Attendees, including key parliamentarians, gained hands-on experience with the NTD scorecard and how to leverage it to drive data-driven advocacy and commitments. Representatives from the Ministry of Health, Africa CDC, and NTD Program Coordinators joined over 40 members of the National Health Assembly for the training. Committee chairs and MPs pledged to advocate for increased NTD funding and to embed NTD priorities within the national budget, ensuring a stronger, more sustainable approach to disease control and elimination. Across Africa, many NTD programs lack adequate funds to fully implement interventions, hence such efforts, empowering legislators to mobilise domestic funding for #NTDs are essential to drive efforts towards the control and elimination of these diseases.

In the face of Africa’s #malaria “perfect storm”- marked by funding shortfalls, rising drug and insecticide resistance, climate-driven shifts in #malaria prevalence, and humanitarian crises disrupting essential services; #malaria experts from across the continent have gathered in Nairobi for a two-day discussion on the African Union Malaria Progress Report 2024. This report, highlighting Africa’s progress in combating #malaria, will be presented at the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2025, aiming to mobilise coordinated, strategic, and lasting political commitment to drive progress toward #malaria elimination. In his remarks at the opening session, Dr. Ouma Oluga, Acting Director of Health Sector Coordination, Intergovernmental Relations, and International Health Relations, speaking on behalf of Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Health, called for strengthened and renewed support for critical pillars of global malaria initiatives and interventions, including The Global Fund. Unveiled today with key stakeholders in attendance, including the Executive Secretary of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) - Joy Phumaphi, the new Zero Malaria Experience , produced by Malaria No More UK demonstrates that ending #malaria is achievable through innovation and strategic funding. There’s no silver bullet — our malaria-fighting tools are most effective when used together. By combining existing malaria-fighting tools, like mosquito nets and medicines, with future scientific breakthroughs like next generation vaccines and gene-drive technology, we could save 13.2 million lives over the next 15 years. 10 million of the lives saved would be children under five. The fight against malaria is becoming more challenging. To succeed, we must support initiatives like Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and The Global Fund to ensure life-saving tools reach those who need them most, while continuing to invest in new #malaria science. This week has been remarkable for advancing cross-border coordination across various regions on the continent. Attended by ALMA Special Ambassador Anthony Okara, the 1st East African Community Malaria Stakeholders Meeting held in Arusha, Tanzania, from October 28-29, brought together #malaria experts from across East Africa, fostering knowledge exchange, collaboration, and joint strategising toward more effective malaria control and prevention in a region where malaria remains a public health problem. Likewise, a workshop focused on reviewing progress and strengthening cross-border collaboration to accelerate malaria elimination in West African and Sahelian countries is underway in Accra, Ghana. The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) is excited to play an active role in both forums, championing regional cooperation to enhance #malaria intervention coordination, data sharing, and cross-learning of best practices and initiatives toward #malaria elimination.

We are delighted to have been part of the just concluded RBM Western and Central Africa National Malaria Program and Partners' Annual Meeting in Ghana. This gathering offered a valuable platform for program managers from the region to exchange key updates on #malaria elimination efforts. We were also thrilled to have ALMA’s Dr. Elizabeth Chizema lead a session on resource mobilisation, highlighting the critical role of domestic funding for malaria, and later host a dinner with Francophone countries to discuss advancement of the domestic resource mobilisation agenda through the establishment of End Malaria Councils and Funds.

A new study in Kenya reveals that while #malaria prevalence dropped nationally from 8% to 6% between 2015 and 2020, the risk has surged by 3 to 4 times especially in northern Kenya, where climate-driven changes in rainfall and temperatures have promoted ideal mosquito breeding conditions. Published in the International Journal of Health Geographics, these findings highlight the urgent need for adaptive public health measures and innovative approaches that account for environmental and socio-economic factors to better protect at-risk populations. Last week, we had the pleasure of conducting a media training workshop for the AFRICAN MEDIA AND MALARIA RESEARCH NETWORK (AMMRN) in Ghana on reporting on the Community Scorecard and other health scorecards, including RMNCAH, nutrition, and #malaria. Themed "Effective Use of the Media to Scale up Universal Health Coverage," the training aimed to empower journalists with skills to enhance their reporting, positively informing the public, fostering dialogue on health issues, and building a culture of constructive, solution-focused journalism. As #Zambia celebrates 60 years of independence, we honor the remarkable contributions of the country’s private sector under the Zambia End Malaria Council for its pioneering role in the fight against #malaria. Companies like Zambia Sugar, Konkola and Mopani Copper Mines, First Quantum, and others have led the way, investing in key interventions such as IRS, LLIN distribution, and larviciding. Their efforts showcase the important role the private sector holds driving progress against #malaria.
