Eastern & Southern Africa Private Public Policy Dialogue Advances Regional Trade and Food Security Agenda in Nairobi Eastern Africa Grain Council and AGRA have today convened stakeholders from across the region for the Eastern & Southern Africa Private Public Policy Dialogue (PPD) to address critical policy and trade challenges and advance efforts toward sustainable agricultural trade and food security. Building on the foundation laid in the previous PPD held in July in Dar es Salaam, this follow-up dialogue deepened discussions and broadened participation to include a wider network of policymakers, private sector players, development partners, and farmer representatives. The focus of this dialogue was to evaluate progress made since the initial forum while formulating strategies to address persistent challenges and unlock the potential of regional trade for economic growth and sustainable development. A key theme of the dialogue was the harmonization of trade policies to eliminate bottlenecks that hinder the seamless flow of goods across borders. Delegates emphasized the need for a unified approach to policy alignment, aiming to create a conducive environment for investment and enhance the competitiveness of the region’s agricultural products. Addressing non-tariff barriers also took center stage, with stakeholders deliberating on practical solutions to reduce high transportation costs, regulatory inconsistencies, and logistical inefficiencies that have long plagued cross-border trade. • "Inclusive Regulations, Better Outcomes" Our ongoing regional stakeholder engagements are vital to refining draft regulations for the implementation of the Food Safety Act (CAP 249) and amendments to the Cereals and Other Produce Act (CAP 274). Why stakeholder engagement matters? 1. Diverse Perspectives, Practical Solutions: Agriculture in Tanzania spans diverse ecological zones, farming practices, and market structures. By engaging stakeholders across Tanzania’s regions—farmers, service providers, and dealers—we ensure the regulations address real-world challenges, are context-specific, and drive fairness across the value chain. 2. Building Trust and Ownership: Early involvement fosters transparency and co-creation, encouraging a sense of shared ownership. Such as process paves the way for smoother implementation. 3. Driving Innovation and Efficiency: These engagements are platforms for knowledge exchange, allowing us to integrate forward-thinking ideas that minimize inefficiencies. 4. Fostering Accountability: We at COPRA are committed to listening. By prioritizing the voices of all stakeholders—especially smallholder farmers—we ensure regulations promote equity and sustainability. In summary, COPRA’s regional stakeholder engagements are paving the way for regulations that are not just effective but also fair, forward-thinking, and transformative—setting the stage for a thriving and resilient cereals and produce industry. Once again, a special thanks to all our partners: AMDT and ASPIRES under the Feed the Future Tanzania Kilimo Tija (KTA) project

  • On 13 December 2024, the Cereals and Other Produce Regulatory Authority (COPRA) concluded the distribution of high-quality pyrethrum seeds produced by TARI Uyole in Songwe Region. This initiative, which began in the Arusha and Manyara regions, culminated with the allocation of 400 kilograms of seeds to farmers in four wards within Ileje District. This initiative is a key component of COPRA’s strategic efforts to strengthen Tanzania’s pyrethrum value chain. By empowering farmers with access to quality inputs, COPRA aims to boost productivity, promote the cultivation of high-grade pyrethrum, and drive sustainable agricultural practices that contribute to national economic growth. #ShirikishaBoreshaEndeleza #Pareto
