What is Brisbane’s biggest legacy opportunity? We recently visited Expo City Dubai, which will host the 2025 Asia Pacific Cities Summit (2025APCS) & Mayors’ Forum one year from now, as we prepare for next year’s event. This is the first time APCS will be hosted in this region, and we were excited to see their venues including the state-of-the-art Dubai Exhibition Centre, which will be the main location for the 2025APCS. 🌟 Driven by innovation, Expo City Dubai is the pioneering legacy of Expo 2020 Dubai, the unforgettable event that welcomed 192 nations and more than 24 million visitors. Expo City Dubai also hosted the auspicious United Nations 28th Conference of Parties (COP28) in 2023. There is so much to explore throughout Expo City including Alif (the Mobility Pavilion), Terra (the Sustainability Pavilion), the Vision Pavilion and the Women’s Pavilion. At the centre of Expo City is Al Wasl, the largest interactive and immersive dome in the world standing at 137 metres wide and 67 metres high – big enough to fit a 747 inside! Our staff were inspired hearing about their legacy offerings through the Stories of Nations Pavilion and the Expo Museum which captures stories and artefacts of Expo 2020 Dubai. The team also met with key leaders of the city to discuss how they are gearing up for next year’s 2025APCS, including the Dubai Executive Council and Dubai Chamber. The 2025APCS’s overall theme of “Collaborate. Inspire. Yesterday I had the honour of moderating a Panel Session on Integrated and Sustainable Management of Border Areas as part of the #AbidjanBorderForum that is taking place in Cote de Voire, 23- 25 October 2024. The theme of the Event was anchored on Green Borders: Between Shared Natural Resource and Security Challenges. The relevance of my presence at the Event, as a representative of Strong Cities Network as Head of Hub for East and Southern Africa, hosted by East African County and Local Governments Association (EACLGA) was revealed in the absence of attention to how important and crucial Cities and Local Governments as local level territories are to the subject at hand. To this end, as a sole Regional institutional voice and advocate for improved National -Local cooperation in the room, and a fervent believer of the great power of these territorial institutions where governance issues that concern community engagement can be effectively resolved, I had to redirect the delegates attention to this crucial fact. From the discussions in the Panel, and reinforced by the presentation and experiences of Mayor Pobe City in Benin, Mr. Adebayo Simon Dinan, also President of the Benin Association of Border Town, the Forum acknowledgesd that Cities & Local Governments are crucial actors and partners for effective Border management and for promoting Cross Border Co-operation, making and additional call for the fast tracking of the implementation of Decentralization Policies by member States of the Forum. On 4th July 2024, Uganda Local Governments Association (ULGA) held a successful pre- AGM dialogue on sharing experiences and adaptation of best practices for sustainable Local Revenue Mobilisation and Management by Local Governments! More efforts for the coming years in to enhance Local Revenue mobilisation efforts and fostering innovative approaches to the Local Revenue! Pooled financing was highly recommended!

The African School of Decentralization, the LPSA Sub-Saharan Africa Working Group, the Dullah Omar Institute (DOI) at the University of the Western Cape, and the Centre for Federalism and Governance Studies at Addis Ababa University have organized a special meeting on “Elevating the Debate and Catalyzing Action: Towards a Pan African Network of Decentralization Advocates.” This session is part of the 4th African School of Decentralization, whose overarching theme is “Decentralization and Human Rights.” 📍 Where: Hybrid (Cape Town) 📅 When: Tuesday, October 22, 2024 🕒 Time: 8:00 AM EDT | 2:00 PM CET | 3:00 PM EAT | 5:30 PM IST | 7:00 PM ICT This upcoming open meeting will build upon the resolutions and insights from the Pan-African Workshop on “Elevating the Debate on Decentralization & Multi-Level Governance in Africa” held in Nairobi in May 2024 and was organized by the Local Public Sector Alliance, Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC), East African County and Local Governments Association (EACLGA), and Institute of Local Government Studies. The workshop identified key mechanisms for bringing together stakeholders from across the continent through a network of decentralization and localization advocates, to engage in knowledge development, knowledge sharing, and evidence-informed policy advocacy, with the goal of elevating the decentralization and localization debate and fostering more inclusive, effective governance structures. The webinar will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about and contribute to the formation of the Pan-African Network of Decentralization Advocates.
