Did you know that leading #angelnetworks share common winning characteristics? Analysis of the #investment processes of leading African angel networks like Lagos Angel Network, Serengeti Angels, Nairobi Business Angel Network, DRC Impact Angels, COREangels MEA and Rising Tide Africa that have a combined portfolio of 140+ early and growth-stage #startups including Flutterwave, ReelFruit, BuuPass - Bus, Train & Flight bookings, and Eden, reveal commonalities that partly account for their successes. One example is having a structured and inclusive method of recruiting new members and making investment decisions. For instance, the Nairobi Business Angel Network uses a referral system to admit new angels to its network. It allows all its members to have a say and participate in all its deals. Additionally, they provide access to training for members through regular masterclasses to upskill them and organise social gatherings to build a sense of community - a good example is the Serengeti Angels’ micro-granting event, Harambee Evening. Last week, Cape Town turned into the buzzing epicenter of the #African #Startup ecosystem at the Africa Early Stage Investor Summit #AESIS2024. It’s hard to summarise an event like this, but when asked to describe it in one word, I couldn’t resist sneaking in a few more: culmination, connection, and celebration. #Culmination, because AESIS is the result of a year’s (and a life time for some) worth of hard work for all of us in the ecosystem. #Connection, because this summit truly brings together inspiring founders, investors, and ecosystem builders from across the continent. And #celebration, because being surrounded by people championing Africa’s entrepreneurial future fills me with pride and hope. A highlight for me? Having the honor of hosting Day 2 of the summit and leading the Deal Morning, where we showcased some of Africa’s brightest ventures. It was also inspiring to see smaller ecosystems—like Tanzania—get their well-deserved spotlight. (shour out Rodrique M., Francis Omorojie, Martin Warioba) Another proud moment? Introducing 8 incredible women founders as part of the She Wins Africa Venture Showcase. Their drive and passion left me in awe. You are doing amazing things.
