Continuing to drive systemic changes in Ukraine's criminal justice. The second module of the development programme, "Pre-trial Investigation Standards for Criminal Justice Practitioners," has concluded. During the training event, which was organized by JustGroup, with support from UNDP Ukraine and the Government of Japan, 33 representatives of justice institutions studied standards for evidence gathering, suspect notification and criminal case planning, as well as had a discussion with judges on evidence collection standards. 📍 Why is this important? In times of war, justice institutions face mounting challenges and an increased workload, so they require clear standards and meaningful improvements. Pre-trial investigation standards are based on international approaches, and also incorporate best national practices. This is intended to strengthen innovative and effective institutional practices grounded in respect for human rights. This development programme has been designed and delivered by the JustLearn hub, supported by JustGroup in partnership with the Faculty of Law at NaUKMA. The initiative is supported by the "Transformational Recovery for Human Security in Ukraine" project implemented by UNDP in Ukraine and financed by the Japan - The Government of Japan. 🌾 Ukraine has launched the #SoulOfSoil project at the Ukraine Mine Action Conference #UMAC2024, in Lausanne. It is a collaborative effort by UNDP, Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko, Moim.Ridnym social enterprise and chef Olga Martynovska to highlight the impact of demining on lives, agriculture, and global food security. The project showcases the positive impact of demining efforts using innovative technologies, such as drone-based surveying, satellite imagery analysis, and artificial intelligence in accelerating the demining process. This project also features an artistic component: A gift set of linen napkins, each embroidered with an ear of wheat – a symbol of hope and resilience – accompany a jar of vegetable appetizer prepared with ingredients from demined land, together creating the powerful symbol of "the world's most expensive dish." The gift sets were presented to leaders of international delegations at UMAC2024. 🇸🇪🇺🇳 In partnership with the Government of Sweden, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine has inaugurated two more Recovery and Development Offices in Pereshchepyne, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, and Konotop, Sumy Oblast. These offices have been created to promote sustainable development in the war-torn communities through an integrated recovery mechanism, helping local authorities prioritize projects for donors, funds and programmes. To ensure the effective operation of this mechanism, UNDP – with support from its international partners – has developed tools and guidelines, trained specialists, and provided the offices with the equipment and furniture they need. Each office comprises a front and a back office. The front office hosts meetings, sessions, training events, and coworking, while the back office is a hub for operations, where specialists work with analytical and statistical data and documentation, and develop strategies and community development plans. 📊 ℹ️ In 2023 and 2024, UNDP – together with the European Union and the governments of Denmark and Sweden – has established a total of 14 Recovery and Development Offices; 4 at regional level, and 10 at community level. 📸 Photo credit: Ivan Lavrenko / UNDP Ukraine

🌐 Everything you see online should be accessible – whether it’s a website, mobile application, pdf publication, video or a social media post. It’s beneficial for everyone.    An accessible website is one that can be viewed even in bright sunlight – because the colour of the text does not merge with the background. If buttons are of a normal size and contrast on a smartphone display, you can even order products comfortably with one hand. The text will be easier to read for people with weak eyesight if the font is large and well-spaced. And this is especially vital for blind persons using auxiliary technologies, such as a screen reader. They can only use a web site if it adheres to web accessibility principles. 💻 At a time when thousands of Ukrainians have been injured or lost their eyesight because of the war, web accessibility is a must for any online product. Since 2021, UNDP has been training civil servants in the basics of web accessibility together with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, and with the support of Sweden. Over two years, more than 1,500 public servants have learned how to make their institutions’ online resources accessible to all people at our training sessions across the country. For White Cane Day, which is held annually on 15 October to draw attention to the problems faced by blind people, we recall how this year's training went in Dnipro. Watch our video to learn how public servants in Ukraine are gaining the skills to make their web products accessible. 📹 📍 The training was organised in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine as part of the DIA Support Project, which UNDP in Ukraine implements with funding from Sweden, with the support of the Dnipro Regional State Administration. Ukraine’s labour market is facing a significant challenge, with an estimated shortage of 4.5 million workers. One way to address this issue is by engaging underrepresented groups and providing them with reskilling opportunities. 🎓 UNDP, with support from the Government of Japan, has launched a series of short-term courses as part of the “Transformational Recovery for Human Security in Ukraine” project. 🇯🇵🇺🇳 These courses prioritize technical professions essential for rebuilding the country, such as welding, plumbing, auto repair, and more. The training, conducted at 10 vocational institutions across six cities, has already equipped more than 160 participants with new skills, and 74 percent of them have secured employment. Learn more in our brand-new video. 📹

🇺🇳🇨🇦 The United Nations Development Programme in Ukraine, with support from the Government of Canada, conducted a series of training sessions to improve the communication skills of health care workers in Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts. During the events, 80 participants were introduced to modern communication strategies, as well as to key aspects of crisis communication. During the training, representatives of health care institutions gained valuable knowledge on building internal and external communication systems, and identifying potential communication barriers and effective ways to overcome them. They also learned how to interact with patients in difficult and unpredictable situations. 🤔 This series of training sessions marked an important step in enhancing communication processes in health care institutions, and they will significantly improve the efficiency of medical service delivery and ensure better interaction between health care specialists and patients. 📸 Photo credit: Oleksandr Prazhevskyi, Oleksandr Sysoienko, Oleksandr Bohachenko / UNDP in Ukraine

The Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights and UNDP in Ukraine supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark held the international "Balancing access to information and national security – lessons from Ukraine during armed conflicts" conference.   In times of war, access to official, reliable, and timely information is critically important. Such information helps make informed decisions, enhances personal safety, and builds trust between the government and the public. However, some information cannot be disclosed due to national security concerns.   At the event, national and international experts on access to information, government representatives, civil society members, and journalists discussed international standards and best practices for finding a balance between the right to information and national security in times of war.   Read more about the conference via the link: https://lnkd.in/eRUqZr-A   Photo credit: Andrii Krepkykh / UNDP in Ukraine Embassy of Denmark in Ukraine Dr. Tetyana Oleksiyuk Oleksii Kabanov

UNDP has released a comprehensive report titled "Enhancing Mine Action Finance in Ukraine." It explores novel financing solutions aimed at advancing Ukraine's national mine action strategy. The report was commissioned by UNDP at the request of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and with support from the governments of the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Its goal was to explore a broad range of innovative finance options for Ukraine, and scope specific models that could reasonably be taken forward for potential application. "UNDP is committed to fostering innovative solutions that address immediate needs while advancing Ukraine's long-term sustainability goals. By aligning mine action with sustainable agricultural practices and renewable energy, we can help drive economic recovery and resilience in Ukraine," said Jaco Cilliers, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine.
