The Annual Conference has a reputation for engaging with the most pressing and current issues within cross-border private and public legal practice, and this year's Conference promises to be no different. In addition to our panels on AI and sports law in an Olympic year, we are delighted to be welcoming an exciting line-up of speakers for a panel discussing the 'Recent Elections in France, the UK, and the EU, and their impact on law'. James Onalaja, barrister at 187 Chambers in London, will be bringing his expertise to this panel as a specialist in serious and complex criminal matters, many of which carry international and human rights elements. James is admitted to the lists of counsel for both the International Criminal Court and the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, and is eligible to represent clients in matters such as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes before both criminal courts in the Hague. We are delighted to welcome him to the Conference. Register your place today:

Bark&Co secure the acquittal of a client charged with the Conspiracy to supply £83million of Cocaine. The prosecution alleged our client to be part of a group operating at the highest level of Serious Organised Crime in the United Kingdom and with international connections. Both the value of the drugs and the direct link to the importation meant that any conviction would lead to sentences of c25 years. Vanessa Wiggins of Bark&Co and Henry Hughes of 187 Chambers represented the client in a hard fought and attritional trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court. The client was proven to be involved in the physical receipt of a smuggled delivery of ¾ of a tonne of high quality cocaine as it arrived in the United Kingdom. The drugs had a street value of £83million and had been shipped directly from Central America. The case was fought on the basis that the law required the prosecution to exclude the possibility that the defendant was ignorant of the contents of the delivery. After a 6 week trial the jury unanimously acquitted our client.

ANDREW TROLLOPE and Greg Unwin acted for a 15-year-old accused of murder in a four-week trial at the Old Bailey. The client was accused of summoning the first defendant to the scene on Regents Park Road in Finchley and providing ‘backup’ as part of a murderous plan leading to a young man being fatally stabbed in the neck. The defence case was that there was no evidence of participation or intent capable of meeting the requirements of R v Jogee & Others. After 23 hours of deliberation, the jury found Mr Trollope and Mr Unwin’s client not guilty of murder or manslaughter. The first defendant was convicted of manslaughter. Mr Trollope and Mr Unwin were instructed by Romana Khan of Solomons Solicitors. Press report: https://lnkd.in/eBK-Uyjz
