Our CEO Rory Brown recently told his story on the Leaders On A Mission podcast. Rory used to work in stabilisation initiatives in conflict zones, and reflecting on his work, it was hard not to see parallels between it and his current role leading Airhive. Rory said about his stabilisation work that, “What was most fulfilling about it was feeling like what you were doing really mattered. Airhive is #hiring a pilot engineer to lead commissioning and operation of our DAC pilots and future commercial plants. We’re seeking an experienced plant operator who is excited by the prospect of rapidly growing direct air capture. This role will entail significant autonomy with noteworthy potential for growth as we scale our DAC operations. Today we're announcing that Deep Sky has chosen Innisfail, Alberta as the location of the world's first direct air capture pilot innovation centre, Deep Sky Labs! Translating to "Island of Destiny" in Irish, Innisfail is an emerging clean technology hub, strategically located an hour north of Calgary along the busiest economic corridor in the province. From idea to construction in less than year, Deep Sky Labs will host pilots from the world's best DAC companies, starting with Mission Zero Technologies, Airhive, Skytree, Skyrenu technologies, NEG8 Carbon (formerly Trinity Green Energies), Phlair, Greenlyte Carbon Technologies, and Avnos, Inc. with the first arriving this fall. Powered entirely by 100% solar renewable electricity, Labs will have the capacity to capture 30,000 tonnes of CO2 from the air over 10 years, where it will be safely and permanently injected underground. Construction begins this month and we're thrilled that Deep Sky Labs has finally found its home. We're also announcing two CO2 storage projects in Quebec - deep saline aquifer storage in Bécancour and in-situ mineralization in Thetford Mines! Work has already begun on mapping the 3D underground using ultrasonic technology. We're targeting wells in 2025 to build our commercial scale DAC project in Quebec. New research from Airhive on public perceptions of direct air capture! We worked with social science researchers Molly James and Natalie Carter to understand perceptions of #DAC in the Tees Valley, United Kingdom, where we are deploying our first pilot project. Natalie and Molly interviewed nearly 40 community stakeholders in the Tees Valley to understand and analyse public perceptions of DAC and socially responsible industry. A few of the takeaways from the interviews that stood out to us: 1. Community members are largely unfamiliar with DAC (something we in the CDR echo chamber can forget) but when presented with information, see the climate benefits as valuable and issues such as energy requirements as important 2. The Tees Valley industrial heritage provides a strong sense of regional pride and interest in industry, but also some scepticism as a result of unfulfilled promises in the past 3. Co-benefits matter, and community members had ideas to offer for what these might look like in context While these takeaways are not necessarily generalisable, we hope this research is the beginning of a concerted effort from the DAC industry to understand how local communities think about DAC and how we can work towards a mutually beneficial DAC industry. We recently had the fantastic opportunity to visit Siemens' Process Automation World in Karlsruhe, Germany. It was great to deep dive into Siemens’ expertise in intelligent measurement, modular process and plant control systems, and manufacturing design. We are excited about how Siemens can support us to make the first commercial #DAC facilities we’re working on at the moment as safe, intelligent and accurate as possible. We also saw some some super cool robotics! We were really pleased to welcome Isometric to our Teesside pilot facility last week! We're collaborating with the Isometric team to ensure that our measurement systems facilitate transparent data collection. This means buyers understand how much carbon dioxide is captured from the air in real-time. It was great to show the team around and show off #fluidisation in action--fortunately the Isometric team is as into carbon removal as we are.
