ARC were delighted to support Plantlife International's call for the UK Government to commit to developing a Grassland Action Plan and celebrate both the importance of grasslands and the diversity they bring - we're ready to discover the full potential of our meadows, green areas, urban parks, roadside verges, and grazing pastures!
We’ve been celebrating grasslands in the heart of the Houses of Parliament!🎉 Nature-rich grasslands are vital national assets and we brought together a diverse coalition of voices to celebrate them in the Houses of Parliament at our reception yesterday. We were delighted to speak to MPs and Peers from across different political parties, farmers and farming organisations, eNGOs, local authorities, and businesses about why they recognise the value of grasslands 🌱 With our most nature-rich grasslands covering only 1% of UK land, we need to work together to save these iconic habitats and their unique species! 📢 We are extremely grateful to Wera Hobhouse MP, who sponsored the event and delivered a powerful keynote speech. She explained that most truly species-rich grassland havens have been destroyed, leaving just tiny fragments of England’s once flourishing meadowland. However, she called on the the UK Government to take a strategic approach, with dedicated Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs resource, saying there would then be vast potential for grasslands to contribute to the government’s commitments to nature, food, economy, climate, and health 🌍 Plantlife’s President Philip Mould OBE described meadows; as “the most beautiful and treasured diverse areas of the UK”, and celebrated that the names of grasslands and their wild plants are capsules of social history 🌷 Sue Pritchard (CEO of the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission), an organic farmer, emphasised that “grasslands are absolutely at the heart of farming and a more resilient and sustainable future” and that a “Grassland Action Plan for England could be part of a strategic approach to land, situated within a Land Use Framework 🚜 The room was decorated with an array of meadow-inspired artwork by artist Iris Hill, who had previously worked as Plantlife’s Artist in Residence. Thank you to everyone who joined us, particularly those organisations who support our call for the UK Government to commit to developing a Grassland Action Plan for England. It's time to unlock the value of our #meadows, grazing #pastures, urban parks, green spaces, and road verges.
