About us

Established in 1988, Andy Sturgeon Design is an internationally recognised leading landscape architecture and design consultancy offering a comprehensive service throughout the UK and overseas. Commissions range from residential private and communal gardens to iconic, landmark schemes such as the roof gardens of Battersea Power Station. From our studio in Brighton, we work with clients in the UK and worldwide on public spaces, major commercial developments, country and historic estates and private gardens. Our international work spans the globe, with current projects in the Middle East, India, Europe, Hong Kong and the Caribbean. Our work is frequently featured on television and in books, magazines and newspapers worldwide. Founded on a passion for design excellence and meticulous attention to detail, our work ranges from the classical to the contemporary. Andy is one of the UK’s leading garden designers; his modern designs are a fusion of traditional materials and contemporary styling which have become known for their timeless architectural qualities, innovative planting and sculptural characteristics. We pride ourselves on working closely with our clients to produce unique schemes, bringing a fresh and individual approach to each and every project. We thrive on opportunities to work in partnership with other professionals to deliver integrated, cohesive solutions. The practice is large enough to handle complex long term projects yet remains small enough to maintain a very personal approach with Andy remaining closely involved with every single project from start to finish. Recent awards include Grand Prize from the Society of Garden Designers in 2024 for our roof gardens at Battersea Power Station. Andy has won nine RHS Gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show, including the coveted ‘Best in Show’ in 2019, 2016 and 2010. Further accolades include Principal Awards from BALI Civic Trust Awards and Supreme Awards from the APL.

  • We are proud to have won an award at the 2025 Society of Garden and Landscape Designers for our Medium Residential Garden on the Isle of Wight. We transformed an unusable steep slope into a contemporary coastal garden complete with winding paths lush Mediterranean planting and curved retaining sculptural walls that create sheltered seating areas, with a series of water chutes and rocky pools flowing down the slope that bring the garden to life. The judges described the garden as 'an extraordinary garden with lush planting that responds to the location beautifully. An exquisite piece of work with skillful detailing for a very challenging site'. Congratulations to all our fellow award winners. photo credit: Rachel Warne

  • The City of London’s Planning Committee has on 31/1/25 granted approval for Brookfield Properties’ 99 Bishopsgate development, a new 54-storey office tower of exceptional design quality set to transform the northern gateway into the City Cluster and due for completion in 2031. Designed by RSHP, 99 Bishopsgate prioritizes adaptive reuse, retaining the existing foundations, which make up nearly 50% of the building's mass, to reduce embodied carbon. Andy Sturgeon Design are responsible for the landscaping element of the development which includes public realm, vertical gardens and expansive terrace spaces. The development will also introduce seamless new pedestrian routes, connecting Liverpool Street Station to the heart of the City and will be animated by extensive landscaping. Inspired by ecological succession we have created a series of species-rich habitats that colonise the building and are adapted to unique environments at different levels. Our design work includes tree planting and landscaping in the public realm, as well as external terraces, double and triple storey height winter gardens and biodiverse green roofs. The development also includes many interior trees and will make a stunning contribution to the London skyline.     Graham Stirk of RHSP adds: 'Terraces conceptually allow landscape to erode the structural framework creating a creating a visibly green building that defines the distinct character to the architecture.’ Brookfield Properties RSHP #99Bishopsgate #London #SustainableDevelopment

The new Mediterranean Garden at the National Trust's Beningbrough in Yorkshire is now open as part of our ongoing ten year masterplan for the property. With increasingly unpredictable and variable weather, we need to start changing the way we garden and I have taken the opportunity to embrace this at Beningbrough. The Italian Garden was in reality an idea from the later half of the twentieth century and so came without much in the way of historical baggage. Sandwiched between the Hall and the Walled Garden it was predominantly lawn and a few cherry trees and cypresses and was more or less a blank canvas. The ground was gently sloping which was a gift as it allowed us to make sure excess water drained off and free draining soil was imported and gently mounded to enhance the contouring. What we have created is in effect a vast gravel garden. Long low walls made from local York stone allow these contemporary architectural elements to sit comfortably in the historical setting and I hope that it will feel quite timeless. 📷National Trust/Anthony Chappel-Ross

  • We’re excited to be part of the team developing 75 London Wall, where we are responsible for the public realm and roof terraces design. A key area of the development is the Prior’s Garden – an exciting new public realm area that adds to the urban fabric and links to a network of public spaces. Inspired by the medieval history of the site, where the River Walbrook once ran and passageways led through to Austin Friars House, the development includes Prior’s Court, a new passageway linking London Wall and Prior’s Garden to Great Winchester Street. Prior’s Garden will be a flexible destination space that includes seating and planting. As well as being a pleasant green area for relaxation and social gathering, Prior’s Garden will be an easily accessible arts and entertainment space for performances, workshops and rehearsals. It also will offer a link to other cultural venues close by in the City.   Real Estate Investors: Castleforge Developer: GAMUDA Architects: Orms
