Last week, we had the pleasure and opportunity to host and mentor three students from the Open City Accelerate programme, organised by Open City Education. Over the course of two days, the #students participated in a site visit to a local greenspace, taking measurements and learning site analysis skills. Back at the studio, they created design proposals through drawings, diagrams, and sketches and ultimately produced a scale model of their landscape proposal using card, clay, and wire. Thank you to our mentors this year Matthew Cool, Louise Koopmans CMLI and Kaley Robertson for organising the in-house workshops at our studio! #OpenCityAccelerate is a year-long programme designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore what a potential career in the built environment would look like through creative workshops, practice mentoring and continuous support. This year's theme, "#Together", has been the focus throughout the programme. Students explored how creating a city is a collaborative act. #MentoringScheme #LandscapeArchitecture

Landscape Architecture Work Experience with Gustafson Porter + Bowman! For the past week I have been working alongside Gustafson Porter + Bowman with enhancing my skills of becoming an architect with relevant work experience. As an introduction, I spectated a staff meeting and learned about the Landscape Architecture firm and their previous projects, internationally and locally. As well as the chosen theme for our work experience week: Kiosks. At Gustafson Porter + Bowman, I conducted a site study measuring the dimensions of the chosen area and did a quick sketch. While doing a site analysis, I had to consider things such as movement, sound, weather, vegetation and residency. Doing this, I abstractly showed the different variables on a sketch. Following this, I created a 1:250 sketch as well as a section drawing of things I wanted to incorporate the theme of togetherness and while conducting the site analysis, I saw that the residency building next to the site was perfect for looking out onto the area. So I wanted to create a space used communally, this gave me the idea of using a stage as well as market stalls (inspired by Borough Market) for visitors to eat at while watching shows performed at the stage. As well as hedges to screen from the wind which was observed when doing the site visit. After doing many many scale drawings from 1:200 to 1:100, I finally created a model made of card and clay accents to visualise my new space! I want to personally thank Gustafson Porter + Bowman as well as Matthew, Louise Koopmans CMLI, Kaley Robertson and Vinaya Janet Thomas for being great hosts and for having me this week while enhancing my confidence in architectural practices and Open City for making this happen. It was truly inspiring and I have had a wonderful time!

Hey network, it’s been while! 😅 However I’m back to share my insightful experience from my two mentoring sessions at Gustafson Porter + Bowman as part of Open City’s Accelerate Programme. SESSION 1: 🌍 To start the day off, I had the opportunity to observe a call with landscape architects at Gustafson Porter + Bowman. We then got to look at some of the company’s several acclaimed projects from around the world. After receiving the brief on our main theme of ‘kiosks,’ we conducted a site analysis, measuring and sketching the area whilst considering factors such as movement, tree locations and weather conditions. Very quickly, you can grasp how attention to detail is crucial when it comes to planning the design of any space. ✏️ I then created a diagram to plan pedestrian movement and designed a green space with a pond and bridge. Upon reflection, I improved my design by connecting two key doorways with a pathway, surrounded by hedges for privacy, and added a raised seating area. To wrap up, I created a section of my area to better visualize my design in 3D. SESSION 2: 📐 On day two, we focused on finalizing and scaling up our designs to create a real model. I began by using a scale ruler to translate my design to 1:100, adding any necessary details and labels for the model. 🌳 It was incredibly satisfying and interesting to see my model take shape, deciding on the materials for different elements to achieve the desired look. One of my favorite parts of the model was how the trees looked, thanks to one of my mentors. In my opinion, the organic, abstract style added an artistic touch to the model! I’d like to express my sincere thanks to GP + B, Open City, and my mentors for helping me gain insight and a newfound appreciation for landscape architecture, a sector I wasn’t too familiar with before. This experience has been eye-opening, and I’m excited to apply the skills I’ve gained as I continue to pursue a career within the built environment!
