Attention, Orcadians! We want to hear your thoughts on the Cold Ironing Buoy being developed for Hatston Harbour. This feasibility study explores shore power solutions for ships at anchor, allowing vessels to connect to shore-based power and significantly reducing emissions, noise, and fuel consumption.    This survey is part of a broader engagement effort led by Aquatera, Orkney Harbours (Orkney Islands Council), Orcades Marine Management Consultants Ltd, Schneider Electric and GAC Group, along with other research conducted within the feasibility study. Within this engagement, we aim to gather insights from industry, regulators, and the local community to ensure the technology meets everyone's needs.    This initiative is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4, funded by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK. CMDC4 is a vital element of the UK SHORE programme, a £206m initiative focused on decarbonising the UK’s domestic maritime sector.    Ready to share your thoughts? Fill in the survey here: https://lnkd.in/eQDw5d8j Thank you for your input!    #ColdIroning #SustainableShipping #MarineInnovation

Aquatera were delighted to host the Japanese delegation this month, the Industry-Academia Consortium for Higher Education Program on Offshore Wind (IACOW), as part of their Scotland Offshore Wind Study Tour. Director, Ian Johnstone, and Japanese Liaison Consultant, Yuka Johnston, guided a group of five consisting of two consortium members, including Nagasaki University, two undergraduates and one postgraduate around Scotland including Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Port of Nigg and Orkney.    The journey started in Edinburgh, where the group connected with research institutions, offshore wind developers, and suppliers, including IDcore and FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility at The University of Edinburgh, The National Robotarium, Scottish Enterprise, Flotation Energy, and the Deep Wind Cluster. To gain insights into the offshore wind construction and installation process, they observed large wind turbine components in Dundee, explored construction and assembly port infrastructure at the Port of Nigg, and enjoyed views of offshore wind farms in Aberdeen.    After an informative mainland visit, the group travelled to Orkney to discover cutting-edge renewable energy initiatives. They engaged with a wide range of the local supply chain to learn about the local perspective on renewable generation and spoke with recent graduates and early-career professionals at Aquatera about their experiences and career paths. The companies included Heriot-Watt University, Green Marine, Orcades Marine Management Consultants Ltd, EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre, Orkney Islands Council, and The Islands Centre for Net Zero.   Whilst the primary goal was to understand the offshore wind industry, the group found that it is just one piece of the puzzle in building a decarbonised society. Through this study tour, they explored various aspects of renewables, including research, development, manufacturing, infrastructure, installation, operations, maintenance, and public perceptions. The group made valuable connections to support their academic and career aspirations.   Aquatera would like to extend a special thank you to all the organisations involved and to the students for their support and contributions to this enriching experience. We look forward to continuing the development of IACOW’s Scotland study tour! #OffshoreWind #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #IACOW #StudyTour #Scotland #Japan #Orkney #Hydrogen #Decarbonisation #SDGs

Calling all Orcadians! Please help us share the Orkney Household Energy Survey across the isles. We are looking for as many households as possible in Orkney to complete the survey, to help build understanding of energy use, fuel poverty and decarbonisation in Orkney - with the incentive of winning a £50 Kirkwall Bid voucher. Fill in the survey here: surveymonkey.com/r/XY5756M Five years ago the first Household Energy Survey was undertaken in Orkney and created a benchmark for understanding household energy use, fuel poverty, attitudes and affordability of adopting new technology, and measuring decarbonisation in Orkney over time. There were more than 2000 responses and these were integral to the development of a number of decarbonisation projects in Orkney, along with Orkney Islands Council’s Fuel Poverty Strategy. The 2019 survey was conducted as part of the ReFLEX Orkney project, funded by Innovate UK, who are also funding the 2024 survey that is being run this time through the Rural Energy Hubs project. The project Partners Aquatera, EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre, Community Energy Scotland, Orkney Islands Council and Shetland Islands Council are working to accelerate decarbonisation in rural and island communities. Now we’re asking Orkney households to complete an updated version of the survey to gauge energy usage across the Isles, identify areas where households are potentially struggling with energy costs or need advice, and compare results from the previous survey. This data will help design programmes for decarbonisation over the next 5 years, with the aim that the survey will be repeated every 4-5 years in future.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of coming onboard the Princess Cruises vessel berthed at Hatston, as part of a scheduled visit for the 4th round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC4) project: The Cold Ironing Buoy Pilot project. 🚢 The project team, led by Orcades Marine Management Consultants Ltd, and made up by Aquatera Ltd, Schneider Electric, Orkney Harbours and GAC Group, was welcomed aboard and had the chance to engage with the Chief Electrical Officer and his crew, to discuss the project idea and possible applications of a Cold Ironing Buoy for their Cruise ships. 🔌 The Cold Ironing Buoy Project is aimed at decarbonising the maritime industry, with cruise liners identified as some of the bigger contributors to maritime emissions. Through this technology, the aim is to provide shore-power to vessels at anchorage, with renewable energy generated in Orkney. The pilot project would take place in Hatston, and is currently in its feasibility study phase. 🔍 The visit was also the first chance for the team to meet one another in person, greeted by fantastic sunny weather! It was a great day and benefited the progress of the project greatly, with plenty insightful discussion and the chance to see the electrical workings of a cruise ship. 💡 The project is funded by Innovate UK. #CMDC4 #Maritimedecarbonisation #coldironing #renewableenergy
