Yesterday 26th August, Aquatera Atlántico Senior Consultant Natalia Arure Alvarez Rojas presented “Offshore Energy, Nature-based Solutions” at the 4th International Congress on Biorefineries and Renewable Energy supported by ICT – Science, Technology, Innovation and Culture Network - BERSTIC 2024. Natalia (MSc Eng) explored the ways in which Nature-Based Solutions utilise natural principles to offer solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation, particularly in marine environments, and she presented on some of the results of Aquatera's project funded by UKPACT: Nature-based Solutions in Colombia's Coastal and Marine Areas. 🏝 https://lnkd.in/dtaya8Ka Colombia’s rich ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as its abundant water resources make Nature-Based Solutions in marine environments fundamental for climate change mitigation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. ♻ The promising link between offshore renewable energy developments, Nature-Based solutions and coastal communities’ efforts in Colombia has enormous potential; given the latter’s significant reliance on marine resources for food security and climate resilience. The involvement of coastal communities in conservation efforts and sustainable management of natural habitats is also an important potential source of income for these groups in the short term, while wider-scale socioeconomic resilience and growth happens in the long-run and as a result of these activities. 🐠 Natalia additionally had the chance to present the INF4INITY project, a new EU funded project, which has the primary goal of using Nature-Inclusive designs for subsea components of floating offshore wind installations, in order to provide solutions for the current techno-socio-enviro-economic challenges of the industry. 🔍 If you’d like to know more, you can now watch the full presentation on YouTube: ▶ https://lnkd.in/e27QqngE #sustainablesolutions #blueeconomy #naturebasedsolutions

Aquatera Group CEO Gareth Davies worked with EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre's Neil Kermode to prepare a comprehensive briefing about the contribution that Orkney and nearby northern waters are likely to make to the future UK energy mix, and about the way in which Orkney’s progressive and innovative approach to energy matters has sought to address and deal with many of the issues that the wider UK system is now starting to grapple with. They suggested that the new Government's net zero initiatives, the emerging GB Energy and the Green Prosperity Strategy could all directly benefit from Orkney experience, expertise and capacity. The pathway to enabling such a contribution was set out as: 📍 Recognition of the contribution that can be made by Orkney into the Net Zero transition; 📍 A mandate provided for Orkney to deliver that contribution as a recognised centre of excellence; and 📍 The flexibility in systems, mechanisms and regulations to explore and implement progressive approaches which can help the UK accelerate to wards a successful transition outcome with benefits for all, not just the few. The Orkney team looks forward to ongoing and further engagement as the UK Government settles into its monumental task. #orkneyrenewables #innovators
It was our pleasure to host the new Climate Minister, Kerry McCarthy MP, in Orkney last week who was inspired to see the clean energy innovation taking place across the islands: "The advancements in #tidalpower, #waveenergy and #greenhydrogen exemplify the kind of homegrown solutions that will boost our energy independence, create jobs and tackle climate change." Visiting EMEC's clean energy demonstration sites, the Minister was introduced to various local and UK companies driving the development of a clean energy future including Orbital Marine Power Ltd, Windracers, Orkney Islands Council, Leask Marine Ltd, Green Marine (UK) Ltd, Aquatera Ltd, Xodus, The Islands Centre for Net Zero and West of Orkney Windfarm. 📣 Aquatera CEO Gareth Davies is delighted to present "Green and Blue Horizons" alongside EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre 's Neil Kermode, at the annual ORKNEY SCIENCE FESTIVAL 2024. 📅 Mon 09 September, 1400 - 1500 📍 The New Phoenix Cinema, Kirkwall "The kind of challenging jobs provided for skilled young people by EMEC and Aquatera and the many other companies in the sector would have been the stuff of dreams for Orcadians in the hard times of the 50s and 60s, when over a thousand people a year emigrated in “the drift from the isles”. With the scaling up of the sector and big offshore wind developments on the way, what can we expect over the next 5-10 years – and what infrastructure do we need to put in place to get the maximum benefits? The two speakers are ideally placed to assess the future, right at the heart not only of energy developments but also environmental and community perspectives." 👉 Book your space now! https://lnkd.in/dXPhHTMM #OrkneyInternationalScienceFestival #OISF24

Aquatera were pleased to be invited to take part in EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre’s Renewables Revolution Open Day for Stromness Shopping Week 2024. 🎉 Consultants Zoe Haywood and Alison Skene led the “Environmental Battleships” board game, a fun challenge for kids young and old to guess the best place for an offshore wind or tidal development. The fit of their chosen squares was revealed when other hidden uses, environmental or human, were uncovered and explained. 🗺 They shared the principles of Aquatera’s RADMApp, a grid-cell-based digital spatial sustainable planning tool. 📍 https://lnkd.in/d8xSGK4B Well done to all who participated!
