improving deaf and disabled people's access to live music

About us

Attitude is Everything improves Deaf and disabled people's access to live music by working in partnership with audiences, artists and the music industry to implement a Charter of Best Practice across the UK. Attitude is Everything supports the music industry to make live music events more accessible. Having begun as a pilot project in 2000, we are now a fully independent charity and part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio of Organisations. We encourage events producers to go beyond legal obligations set out in The Equality Act and implement Best Practice, providing a fair and equal service to their Deaf and disabled customers.

All In appoints Attitude is Everything to create UK’s first accessibility standards for creativity and culture.  "Attitude is Everything is delighted to have been asked to develop the standards and accreditation for the UK-wide All In scheme. This is a truly groundbreaking project to support the creative and cultural sector to provide accessible experiences that disabled consumers can trust and enjoy free of disabling barriers. We look forward to working with the four nation Arts Councils, industry stakeholders and disabled people over the year ahead on this exciting scheme." Celia Makin-Bell, Managing Director, Attitude is Everything #WeAreAllIn https://lnkd.in/e5dqfG3D

    Founder at Attitude is Everything

I wanted to take some time in #TrusteesWeek to thank Attitude is Everything’s Board of Trustees, co-chaired by Jane Dyball & Jacqui Adeniji-Williams. Being a charity trustee can be complex & challenging, as well as bringing with it an awful lot of responsibility. However, our trustees rise to the occasion, giving up their time so that our organisation thrives. They’re brilliant at raising awareness of our work, they’re generous in sharing their contacts & their knowledge & some are mentors to the #DisabledPeople who take part in our programmes. I’m also grateful for their confidence in me - it’s something that I’m very appreciative of as a #DisabledLeader & co-lead of Attitude is Everything because it enables me to do the very best that I can. You can read more about our trustees here: https://lnkd.in/eq9najBQ

We recently consulted our staff, trustees, and networks about language - because we realised we weren't being consistent when talking about race and ethnicity. What did we decide on? ⏩ Disabled people of the global majority. Language is important and powerful, and it is constantly evolving. That’s why we aim to review this language every two years. We’ll do this by asking our staff, trustees, and network members for their input – just like we did this year.

    • Text reads: Language is important, powerful and constantly evolving... Simple illustration shows 3 speech bubbles with lines (representing lines of text), a heart, and elipses.

Bee Grzegorzek, Dominique Gibson, Jessica / YISKA & Gillian Morrison led a fantastic panel all about accessibility in live events at #WOMEX24 last week. Some stellar quotes:  ❗ “When I have my walking stick, I am disabled. If I don’t have it, I’m still disabled and my access needs still exist.” Yiska, Future Leader alumni, artist, Attitude is Everything trainer. 📢 “70% of disabled people risk their health at work due to a fear of disclosure. The onus has to be on promoters & employees to ask the question. The work should not fall on disabled people.” Dominique Gibson, our Training Manager. 🎧  “As a promoter it's really hard to provide accessible events as the infrastructure at venues often isn’t there.” Gillian, Future Leader alumni, artist & co-founder of Women in Music Edinburgh. 💛  “It's important to talk about disabled joy - the experience of being supported & having your access requirements met." Bee, our Inclusive Communities Manager.

Black Lives in Music are leading the change across the music industry, formally launching its Anti-Racism Code of Conduct at #WOMEX24 💡 Listening to Roger Wilson, director of ops & co-founder, last week was eye-opening and inspiring. "Change takes time but it also takes a lot of different currencies. Some of that currency is energy and some of it is courage." 💯 Celia Makin-Bell, our managing director says: "Black Lives in Music are key partners in our work to tackle inequity and discrimination across the music and live events industry. We welcome their Anti-Racism Code of Conduct, which we see as a vital part of ensuring inclusion and safe working environments for Black disabled people. We encourage the industry to engage with BLIM's new Equi-Track tool and believe it can be a key resource in tackling discrimination within the industry across all protected characteristics." 📝 Read more here > https://lnkd.in/e95sAT9U
