We exist to raise the profile of our members & give them a chance to influence local decision making in BANES.
About us
3SG is a grassroots membership organisation that was set up in 2016 by members of the third sector in Bath & North East Somerset. We recognise the vital role that local charities, community groups, the faith sector and social enterprises play in our community and our aim is to raise their profile and give them a chance to influence local decision making. We are also collaborating with organisations in BANES to grow a Compassionate Community movement, which has taken been central in the response effort to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Our long-term ambition is to nurture a grassroots social movement which recognises there are people and organisations supporting each other, who care, are available and can step in as and when needed, with actual or virtual support. We will do this by working together and sharing a common brand that can amplify the existing skills and resources of the Council, education providers, healthcare, 3rd sector, faith community, businesses, residents and volunteers.

Happy International Women's Day! 💚 In November 2023 Pro Bono Economics released a fascinating report on Women and the charity sector. Their insights cover both women in the sector's workforce and the vital support, advocacy and services the sector provides women. 18 months on and in a world that sadly seems to be rapidly regressing in terms of equity and inclusion, these insights couldn't be more important to re-circulate. Here's just some of the highlights found in this report... 💚 Women in the charity sector contributed approx. £19 billion to the economy in 2019 💚 Women make up 68% of the charity sector’s employees 💚 Just 32 out of 93 CEOs leading the UK’s 100 biggest charities by income are female. 💚 Male trustees outnumber female trustees by two to one 💚 Over 1/3 of women (36%) think that charities’ roles in creating a sense of community is one of their most important roles, compared to just over 1/4 men (27%). We all have a responsibility in making our sector a better place for women of all ages, stages and backgrounds, to thrive. Well worth a read, you can access the full report here - https://lnkd.in/eVcctXhC.

Today - Sunday 9th March 2025 - is the Day of Reflection across the UK for the COVID-19 pandemic. Today we remember those we lost, and honour the kind and selfless contributions of so many during these unprecedented times. In the first lockdown, 3SG’s team rapidly mobilized over 2,000 Emergency Response Volunteers to help B&NES residents affected by the government’s COVID-19 measures, delivering over £100,000 worth of food and medication deliveries and providing invaluable befriending support to those isolating. When COVID-19 lockdown restrictions began to ease, many Emergency Response Volunteers continued to work as marshals supporting the vaccination programme. Today we want to pay tribute and thanks to these amazing volunteers. Your tireless commitment and support within our communities will always be cherished. Volunteering was one of the most positive stories to come from this time, with so many people stepping up to give their time and support to their local communities, charities, NHS services, and neighbours. The quick action and mobilization of this incredible community energy and enthusiasm in Bath & North East Somerset was made possible by the dedication of so many, with honourable mentions to James Carlin BEM, Sarah Williams-Martin BEM, Miles Lloyd and Joshua Hale BEM. #DayOfReflection #3SG #CompassionateCommunity #Volunteers #ThankYou #Charity #Community

Focusing on legacy fundraising can have a significant impact for charities of all sizes, with a much higher return on investment than the other areas that we all tend to focus on more. Legacy Foresight estimates that legacy income is expected to double in real terms by 2050, and all organisations can build awareness amongst supporters through regular comms about legacy giving and the difference this could make. Learn about legacy fundraising and the opportunities for your organisation from our experienced panel at our upcoming Fundraising & Communications Network, on Wednesday 12th March at 📍 Bath Cricket Club. 👉 Sign up here! https://bit.ly/4iiiYgO Our panel includes: Wendy Pidgeon - Legacy Fundraising Consultant Sarah Dodd, Head of Legacies, Dorothy House Hospice Care Emma Drew, Individual Giving Manager at Genesis Trust Bath This is an opportunity to meet and connect with others involved in fundraising and communications across Bath and North East Somerset's Third Sector. #Network #3SG #Fundraising #Event

This is devastating news for the sector, our communities, and the most vulnerable. To our knowledge, 5 local charities have closed in the last 6 months due to lack of funding and many others have had to cut back on vital services or will be forced to stop them completely. These organisations are needed desperately by our communities now more than ever. Many are serving the most vulnerable in society, propping up statutory services to stop people falling inbetween the gaps, and they deserve investment, support and recognition. We are acutely aware of the challenges the sector faces and are committed to advocating for the local Third Sector in B&NES. Chronic underfunding and convoluted commissioning processes are unsustainable. We must fight for the most vulnerable in society, who suffer the most from this shortsightedness. We stand with Trauma Breakthrough and all those organisations facing difficult decisions, having delivered above and beyond what they are paid to do and can maintain. No one can disagree how valuable the sector is - but we need system action now to match the words.
This is the hardest announcement we have ever had to make. Since 2013 Trauma Breakthrough has provided vital specialist mental health services at no or low cost to hundreds of people across the South West every year. However, along with all charities we are facing the most challenging funding environment most of us have ever known. Since 2020 we have seen demand increase by 2750% - from 2 or 3 a month to over 100 every month. Despite the fact that over 80% of our service-users have been referred by NHS mental health services and GP surgeries, we get absolutely no funding from the NHS or Local Government. At the same time, many other funding bodies are closing their programmes or changing the types of things that they will support. As a result it is no longer financially possible for us to continue, and the trustees have taken the difficult decision to close the charity. All of our counselling, psychotherapy and support services will come to an end by 7th March 2025, and the charity as a whole will close by the end of March. Most of the people who come to us have very complex mental health needs. Often, they have been referred to mental health services or have presented at Accident and Emergency Departments many times, and typically they have been trying to get suitable help for years or even decades without success. Whilst we are doing everything we can to identify alternative sources of support, there is almost nothing available, and we are deeply concerned that many people will just fall through the gaps in current mental health provision. We are heartbroken for our service-users who will now not get the help they so desperately need, and for our amazing and dedicated staff team who have devoted so much time and energy in helping survivors of trauma to recover.
