We provide compassionate care and support for people with a life-limiting illness in our 700sq mile community.

About us

We believe every life is incredibly precious, and no one should face death alone. At Dorothy House, we offer an exceptional level of practical, physical and emotional care for those in our community who are approaching death, as well as their family and friends. In other words, we’ve got you. We know death can feel scary and unfair. Although we can’t make it go away, we’re here to provide whatever support our patients need to face it without fear. We’re by their side, as much or as little as they need us - whether that means hands-on help, advice or just a cup of tea with someone who gets it. We’re here for friends and families too. It means so much to our patients to know their loved ones will be supported. And, by dealing with the everyday practical issues, we help everyone find more time and space for the things that mean the most. The Dorothy House standard of care reaches deep into our community. By sharing our knowledge and expertise we help people to take control and plan for the end of their lives, and equip more people in our society with the skills and courage to provide the end of life care each of us deserves. While we support our community, they support us. We are funded by people living in the communities we serve. Together, we can protect everyone’s right to a meaningful life and a peaceful death.

"An outcome where you had someone choose an assisted death because of a real or imagined fear that they couldn't get the right support would be a moral and practical disgrace." - Toby Porter, CEO, Hospice UK. Thank you to the committee for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill for bringing the hospice sector's voice to the discussion on this important bill.

  • You may remember a few weeks ago, we introduced you to Linda and Krystyna, two of our amazing Hospice at Home carers who were starting the new year with a splash! Alongside two of their friends, Linda and Krystyna took on a deep dive in the Red Sea in Egypt, all to raise funds for Dorothy House. We're pleased to share these amazing snaps from their trip, and the news that their fundraising total now stands at a fantastic £1,442! If you'd still like to support their fundraising efforts, we've included the link to their JustGiving page in the comments below. Have you been inspired to raise funds for Dorothy House? We have a whole host of events and challenges you can get on board with this year, including our brand-new Bath City Zipline, and our biggest overseas trek ever taking place in 2026 to Peru! However you decide to fundraise, your support will help to protect our vital core services now and into the future, ensuring that people in our community facing death do so with the specialist care and support they deserve. #TogetherInAdversity #FundraisingChallenge #HospiceHeroes

  • The award-winning Men’s Walk to Support returns on Saturday 8 March! One of our biggest annual fundraising events, this 8-mile walk from Winsley to Bath will bring together men from all different walks of life to share their experiences of grief and bereavement while raising funds to support the work of Dorothy House, helping to protect our vital core services. This year, we’ve got plenty of fantastic opportunities for local businesses to join us too! Whether you team up with your male colleagues to take on the walk, or support with marshalling along the route, we’d love to hear from you. We’re also looking for companies to come on board as sponsors for this much-loved event, with different packages available to suit you. Check out our Sponsorship pack to find out more! #WalkForACause #TogetherInAdversity #MensWalkToSupport

  • The Ice Bath Challenge is back for 2025 and we would love for you to join us! It’s the ultimate icebreaker if you’re looking to step outside your comfort zone, and at the same time you’ll be raising vital funds for Dorothy House! So, what does it involve? You will be taken through a 1-hour breathing method by a certified Wim Hof Instructor, to prepare you for the challenge. You will then take the plunge and submerge yourself in an ice bath for 2 minutes, after which you’ll be rewarded with a hot drink and some cake to warm you up. Entry costs £30, and we ask that participants raise a minimum of £300 in sponsorship, helping us continue to provide our much-needed end of life care across our 800 square mile patch. By fundraising for us today and standing together with us in the face of adversity, you can help protect vital core services now and into the future. By taking on this super-cool challenge (literally!), you'll be helping us ensure those facing death in our community can continue to do so with the specialist support they deserve. #TogetherInAdversity #FundraisingChallenge #ColdTherapyBenefits #MindOverMatter

  • Thank you Kate Bond for this beautiful upgrade to our Inpatient Unit ambulance entrance 💜

Design for restorative spaces - biophilic digitally designed large mural and window manifestation design, specialising in healthcare. Bespoke artwork and fabric design.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to deliver a third commission for Dorothy House Hospice Care. Last year, I created a large nature-based design for the back of reception, which was unveiled alongside the renovation of the space, providing a calming welcome for all who visit, work, or stay. I also designed the property bags for patient belongings. This time, my focus was on the ambulance entrance. The two designs are thoughtfully centered around the needs of patients and families. The first design is for the large window overlooking the courtyard, while the second is for the ceiling above, offering a peaceful view for those arriving on a bed. The ceiling design mimics the tree canopy found within the beautiful grounds of Dorothy House, a gentle distraction and a moment of calm for patients and their families, particularly during out-of-hours visits. The designs were developed in close consultation with staff, ensuring they reflect the needs of the space and its users. Some of the plants were specifically chosen by the clinical team, adding a collaborative touch to the designs. Hospices are facing increasing challenges in securing sufficient support from the government right now, which can make large-scale renovations feel out of reach. Yet, the importance of creating patient-centered spaces that offer comfort and dignity cannot be overstated. Thoughtful design improvements, even within existing structures, can transform the environment and make a meaningful difference to the lives of those receiving care. I really hope the designs bring a sense of comfort to everyone who passes through these spaces. Thanks to Artworks for the printing and installation and SmartDesign studio for the excellent visualisation to put my design into. #biophilic #BiophilicDesign #calm #nature #patientcare #hospice #hospicecare #ambulanceentrance #welcome #reassurance #distraction #consultation #engagement #treecanopy #garden #heathcaredesign #DesignForWellbeing #designforwellbeing #PatientCentredDesign #StaffCollaboration

  • The Bereavement Help Point is an open access community group where anyone who has been bereaved is welcome. These sessions run at various locations across our community and are free to attend, with no need to book ahead. From February, we’ll be launching opening a new Bereavement Help Point in Peasedown St John, in partnership with The Carers' Centre (Bath and North East Somerset) and We Hear You (WHY) , funded by National Lottery Community Fund. These will take place on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month going forwards. For a full list of locations, visit our website. #BereavementSupport #WiltshireCommunity #GriefAndLoss

  • Despite our best efforts and the incredible support of our communities, Dorothy House is not immune to the unprecedented financial challenges faced by hospices across the UK. Rising costs, a National Insurance increase and stagnant government funding which only covers 20% of our total costs, are having a devastating impact on our financial sustainability. We will campaign for change to ensure hospices are able to secure fair, long-term funding solutions. However, we have an immediate critical fundraising shortfall which the recent government announcement of a one-off cash injection will not completely address. That’s why we’re appealing to anyone who one day may need our services to stand with us in the face of adversity, helping us protect our vital core services now and into the future, ensuring no one in our community faces death alone. Head to our website to find out more about how you can get involved. #TogetherInAdversity #HospiceFunding #EndOfLifeCare

  • Meet Fiona, another one of our amazing Bath Half runners for 2025! She’s taking on the race this March for two very special reasons. Fiona is part of Tribe PT, which is owned by her partner, Dean. We’ve been very lucky to have been supported by the whole gang at Tribe for some time now, including during our Bridge the Gap Appeal. Dorothy House was nominated as Tribe’s chosen charity after we cared for Dean’s mum, Sue, who died at the Hospice five years ago. Fiona’s other motivation for taking on the Bath Half is her own personal challenge, after she severely broke her ankle earlier this year, which resulted in surgery to fix it with metal plates. Her recovery has been slow and painful, but she is gradually working towards getting her fitness back. So far, she’s climbed a few mountains, including Pen y Fan and Scafell Pike, and has also been increasing her running miles, telling us that the Bath Half has been giving her something to focus on. Join us in wishing Fiona the very best of luck with her training, and we’d also like to say a big thank you to Fiona, Dean, and the whole of Team Tribe for their ongoing support. Have you already secured your place in next year’s Bath Half? Why not join Fiona as part of Team Dorothy House and run for us? Head to our website to find out how you can register for an independent place today. #TogetherInAdversity #BathRunners #FundraisingChallenge
