Lord Mayor Councillor Micky Murray was pleased to host a working lunch today to officially welcome Dori Winter as incoming US Consulate Political & Economic Chief, along with our colleagues Chief Executive John Walsh, Damien Martin, Strategic Director, Place & Economy and Laura Leonard, International Relations Manager. Belfast is proud to have longstanding, valuable US connections, including our Sister Cities relationship with Nashville (since 1995) and Boston (since 2016) - as well as many business, cultural, educational, sporting and tourism links. We facilitate the USA stakeholder group, which was established 20 years ago and US consulate staff continue to play a key and important role as members. We value our participation each year in the New York New Belfast and Belfast International Homecoming events and the Friendship Four ice hockey tournament - and tomorrow evening, we're hosting a civic reception for the start of the Nashville 2 Belfast food and music festival. It was great to have the opportunity to update Economy Minister Conor Murphy MLA and Communities Minister Gordon Lyons MLA on the significant progress Belfast Region City Deal (BRCD) partners are making on transformative tourism and regeneration projects that will attract new visitors to the region to stay longer and spend more - and help achieve key government objectives. We were pleased to be joined by David Burns, Chief Executive Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council and Chair of Belfast Region City Deal’s Tourism and Regeneration Advisory Board and John McGrillen, Chief Executive, Tourism Northern Ireland. BRCD has committed £210m in total towards seven key tourism and regeneration projects which will secure investment of around £350 million across the region. Contracts for Funding have now been agreed for six of these projects, with the last Contract for Funding for Belfast Stories expected in summer 2025. Last week, some of our team were in Wexford to support our city's bid for Fleadh Cheoil which we hope to bring to #BelfastCityCentre in 2026. Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray, joined our Chief Executive John Walsh to experience a short taster of this year's gathering, which saw thousands of musicians and visitors flock to the town for the eight-day event. Along with our bid partners Ards Comhaltas and colleagues at Visit Belfast and Tourism NI, they met with organisers Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (CCÉ) and other attendees, including Taoiseach Simon Harris TD, to discuss Belfast's potential to host the prestigious event - the world's biggest celebration of traditional Irish music and entertainment, attracting visitors from across Ireland and beyond. After a challenging few weeks for our city, it was so much fun to be in #BelfastCityCentre yesterday (Saturday 17 August) to celebrate the start of #BelfastMela with a day packed full of colour, fun and diversity. We were also celebrating the fantastic news that we have been awarded almost £15 million by Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) - European Funding #PEACEPLUS Programme, enabling us to support even more exciting, community-led projects which will bring thousands of people from different backgrounds together. A big thank you to Marie-Thérèse Hickey of Verona Bridal on Bruce Street, Curtis and John Sloan of Sloan’s Gym on Chapel Lane and Peter Richards and Sarah McAvera of Golden Thread Gallery on Queen Street - who all took time out of their busy days to explain how they've used the capital funding to restore and revitalise their premises.
