Recently, Georgina Calvert-Lee was asked to comment on this article in nature around how restorative justice could help to heal science communities torn apart by harassment misconduct. In the article, Sarah Wild shares some of the challenges that the scientific community face as when a scientist is found to have harassed a colleague or student, it can reverberate through the research community — sometimes for decades. Not knowing how to treat the parties involved and a lack of guidelines for how to handle a harasser’s data, research, collaborations and publications can tear specialities apart. Many questions are left, such as should the work of a harasser be cited, is it appropriate to collaborate, how do former students present work they were involved in with this person? And the bigger question, should people who have behaved unacceptably be allowed to return to research? In the piece, Sarah quotes Georgina, who discusses that the conventional academic disciplinary processes, modelled on the criminal justice system, are not fit for purpose, and the major flaw of this is that a judicial model that it pits one side against another. She explains how this format is very polarising and what implications this can have for both the complainant and the accused.
