Join us on Thursday 17th October at 9 am for our 'Article 6: How to scale the ITMO market' webinar. 📅 Sebastien Cross, Chief Innovation Officer and Co-founder at BeZero Carbon, Axel Michaelowa, Senior Founding Partner at Perspectives Climate Group and Dr. Alexandra Soezer, Director at the Climate Action Center of Excellence (CACE), will explore the crucial role of ratings in scaling the market for Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) under Article 6. Following our recent report ‘To Baku and beyond: scaling Article 6 carbon markets with integrity’, and ahead of COP29, which is expected to be focused on Article 6 operationalisation, this session will delve into the key elements for assessing whether an ITMO is Paris-aligned. They will be exploring the essential elements that could contribute to the integrity and effectiveness of ITMOs, including: 🌐 NDC ambition and performance 🔎 The characteristics and carbon accounting practices underlying the ITMO. 🌍 Whether the ITMO contributes to overarching goals of the Paris Agreement both to support global decarbonisation and sustainable development. ➡️ Register here: https://hubs.li/Q02Snx2S0 #Article6 #CarbonMarkets #COP29 #ClimateAction

🌍 Last week, our Policy Manager, Lily Ginsberg-Keig, participated in Baku Climate Action Week. She engaged in key discussions on the future of carbon markets ahead of COP29. Read her highlights below 👇 🎯 Azerbaijan is taking steps to integrate carbon markets into their national decarbonisation plans, with the announcement of upcoming regulations for both voluntary and compliance carbon markets. 💡 It was inspiring to see experts and leaders come together to scale carbon markets and make progress on Article 6 negotiations. Countries are aligning and bringing new ideas to the table, which is promising as we approach COP29. 🪙 The economic potential of carbon markets is clear, with the British ambassador highlighting our figure: a $100 billion carbon market would create 17 million jobs—surpassing the current total in oil and gas. https://hubs.li/Q02SkXhM0 We’re looking forward to seeing how these discussions progress at COP29! #COP29 #BCAW #Baku #CarbonMarkets #CarbonRatings

🗽 BeZero’s key takeaways from Climate Week NYC This year, Climate Week NYC coincided with the UN General Assembly, creating significant momentum among policymakers and buyers. We had 15 team members attending, participating in 20+ events, and engaging with leaders in the climate space. We co-hosted events in great company, including our NY Climate Week Breakfast hosted with J.P. Morgan, Bloomberg and Illuminate Financial as well as our breakfast with Agreena.🌱 Discussions highlighted the future of the market, the critical role of ratings, and the positive development of infrastructure to mature and scale the market. Here’s our key takeaways: 🌐 Convergence with compliance: with recent Article 6 developments, compliance markets are now in the spotlight, and governments are setting the rules for the voluntary market. 📈 Future is optimistic for the voluntary market: there’s growing optimism about demand, with ongoing discussions on managing the shift from old to new methodologies and handling the supply of legacy credits. 💰 Making carbon investable: the financialisation of the carbon market is attracting more capital e.g. offtakes unlocking funding. The growth of insurance is helping manage risk better - showcasing the value of ratings and broader risk analytics. Markets must be built taking into account the nature of project-level risk. 🌎 Making carbon markets work for the global south: positive progress of carbon regulations are setting countries up for future Article 6 success, but the market needs positive demand signals to get the finance flowing again. 🌱 Time for corporate action: ESG isn’t driving markets enough for shareholder pressure to push corporate decarbonisation. This is a big issue if we want targets to be met. CFOs need a mandate from their boards and investors to spend what’s needed to decarbonise. We’re excited to participate in the discussions that will drive progress at this year’s next global conference, #COP29! #ClimateWeekNYC #NYCW #ClimateAction #CarbonMarkets #CarbonRatings

"Conservation benefits humanity, but it can incur costs as well. There is a real need to transfer funding from the people who are benefiting from conservation to those on the front lines of enacting that conservation." BeZero's Dr Phil Platts, VP, Geospatial & Earth Observation, is a conservation scientist whose work looks at the measurement and modelling of forest biodiversity, ecosystem services, and conservation costs.🦎 In this video, Phil explains how his work in the field opened his eyes to the critical need for outside finance to fund project activities which allow local communities to manage forests more sustainably, and how this led him to his current work in bringing much needed transparency to carbon markets.🌳 🌍Learn more about how BeZero's experts in sustainable development, biodiversity and conservation assess the non-carbon impact of climate projects around the world: https://hubs.li/Q02RZdZ00

Discourse on improving carbon credit quality often centers on forestry projects, with innovations in geospatial technology and the application of dynamic baselines helping to bolster quality. ✔️ But improvements are happening everywhere. Recent advancements in improved cookstove methodologies for instance aim to consolidate previous project designs, and reduce baseline imprecision. 📈 🥘Read our case study on cookstoves in Kenya to learn why four projects in the same location, targeting similar demographics, can yield vastly different carbon outcomes, and how BeZero leverages independent data to identify risk levels in these scenarios: https://hubs.li/Q02RPRCg0

Why do safeguards matter for high-integrity projects? 🌍 Project safeguards improve the likelihood of carbon outcomes, increase non-carbon benefits, and reduce the risk of negative impacts. However, inconsistencies in both requirements and reporting make safeguards hard to identify and interpret. 💻 To help carbon credit users better understand non-carbon risk, our experts have surfaced project-specific safeguard information on BeZero’s dedicated Beyond Carbon dashboard.
