Yesterday our CEO, Timi Okuwa, met with the Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities, Bridget Phillipson MP, and presented her with the Black Britain’s Mandate, a groundbreaking, transformative initiative set to reshape the landscape of racial equity in the United Kingdom. Our mandate sets out key recommendations across our six pillar areas – education, justice, health, culture, economic empowerment, and housing – which we need the Government to enact in order to improve the lives of Black and other ethnic minorities in the UK. At BEO, we are also writing a State of Black Education in Britain report, funded by Mission 44. This report will delve into the barriers to education for Black pupils in the UK and make recommendations on what can be done to dismantle them, to enable children to reach their full potential. We have invited ministers from the education department to attend the launch of this report in December. You can read our mandate on our website: https://lnkd.in/e8yw4Nmg
About us
Black Equity Organisation is a new independent, national Black civil rights organisation created to dismantle systemic racism in Britain, drive generational change and deliver better lived experiences for Black people across the country. ‼️Hey folks, I need your help! A mission that’s really close to my heart is getting more capital into the hands of underrepresented founders, especially Black founders. 🙌🏾 Over the last few months, I've been working on the F100 Growth Fund, an incredible partnership between Sky and Black Equity Organisation backing Black entrepreneurs in the UK to grow and scale their businesses. Next Wednesday we are hosting a Demo Day, and this is where I could really use your support! We want to have the right people in the room. We’re particularly keen to hear from Angels, Angel Syndicates, and Pre-seed funds who are ready to back diverse innovators. If you know someone who should be there, please tag them in the comments We’re also looking to connect with suppliers who are committed to diversifying their supply chains. We’ve got some incredible consumer brands like RIDDIM Snacks, Yendy Skin and many more. Link to demo day in the comment. David Carrigan Reema Samuel-Lewis Timi Okuwa

This #BlackJoyFriday we celebrate Benjamin Zephaniah. Brunel University of London is organising an annual event to take place on April 12th every year, also known as Benjamin Zephaniah Day. "The race industry is a growth industry. We despairing, they careering. We want more peace they want more police." - Benjamin Zephaniah

The British Film Institute (BFI) plans a redundancy that would end the 17-year-old African Odysseys programme. We call upon the BFI to immediately reverse this decision to prevent a catastrophic loss of Black history archive and cause immense, ongoing damage to community relations. Chris Kaba mattered. Martyn Blake has been cleared of murdering Chris Kaba, despite Kaba being unarmed when he was fatefully shot by Martyn Blake in 2022. There is a systemic devaluation of Black lives in the UK, which continues to prevail under a racist and unjust system. Chris isn’t just another statistic. He was a loved son, brother, and friend and deserves to be remembered for his life, instead of dehumanised in his death. We call for police accountability and reform.

Our research for the Black Britain's Mandate showed significant data that the Government needs to address and improve on. ➡ Black Caribbean boys are around 6 times more likely to be excluded than their white peers in some boroughs and 3 times more likely to be excluded than their peers on average. The Department for Education should undertake and publish equality impact assessments on existing and new policies in early years education and childcare with a view to improving access to childcare and early years education.
