The history of Notting Hill Carnival 🎉 🖤 Kelso Cochrane died after a racially motivated attack on Southam Street, Notting Hill on May 17th 1959. 🖤 Activity to ease racial tension within the Notting Hill area began after Cochrane's murder, leading to a children's street fayre organised my local resident and community activist, Rhaune Laslett. 🖤 Claudia Jones, a Trinidadian human rights activist based in London, put on a BBC broadcasted indoor ‘Caribbean Carnival’ at St Pancras Town Hall back in 1959. 🖤 In 1966 the first outdoor festival took place in the streets of Notting Hill. The first event saw Henderson's steel band weave its way through Portobello Road as a trail of locals spontaneously gathered and danced in the street to the sound of pan, and so the first Notting Hill carnival was born. #NottingHillCarnival #NottingHillHistory #CaribbeanCulture #StreetFestival #CulturalCelebration

With Carnival weekend coming up, let's explore the history of Carnival... 🎉 By the 1950s, Brixton and Notting Hill had the largest population of Caribbean people in Britain. 🎉 Trinidadian-born activist Claudia Jones and founder of the West Indian Gazette newspaper organised a Caribbean Carnival in St. Pancras Town Hall on 30th January 1959. 🎉 In 1966, Rhaune Laslett and Andre Shervington organised a street festival with the aim of entertaining local children as well as attempting to ease ongoing tensions. 🎉 By 1974, 100,000 people and a dozen bands participated and in 1975 static sound systems were introduced adding Jamaican reggae, dub and ska music to the traditional calypso and soca. The history of Notting Hill Carnival represents the resilience and cultural diversity of the communities of London, and the rich Caribbean cultures brought to life through food, music, costumes and dance. #NottingHillCarnival #CaribbeanCulture #CulturalDiversity #LondonHistory #CaribbeanCommunity

When we launched as a charity in 2022, we also launched two vital reports into the systemic racism Black people face in the UK. The research shows the impact of systemic racism at the heart of UK society, within institutions, structures and policies. There is a stark lack of representation of Black people in senior positions in education, healthcare, and in the media. Happy National Financial Awareness Day! Today we celebrate the importance of financial literacy and empowerment. Financial skills, such as personal finance, budgeting, and investing sometimes seem like foreign languages and one of the big factors why we are not able to raise our economic status. There is still a huge disparity in the rates of financial literacy across different racial and ethnic groups which perpetuates the massive wealth gap. Multiple financial literacy courses exist online, many of them free and accessible. PwC has one that is great for teenagers: https://lnkd.in/ehV65rWz #FinancialAwarenessDay 🎉📈💰

Despite Notting Hill Carnival's consistently negative portrayal in the media, The Voice's exclusive study shows how Carnival generates £396 million for London's economy and supports the equivalent of 3,000 full time jobs. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e4cvrP37

54 years ago today on 9th August 1970, Black communities took to the streets to protest repeated raids on the Mangrove, a Caribbean restaurant where Black communities would frequently meet in Notting Hill. The protests led to arrests, namely of the Mangrove Nine. The Mangrove Nine consisted of Barbara Beese, Rupert Boyce, Frank Crichlow, Rhodan Gordon, Darcus Howe, Anthony Carlisle Innis, Altheia Jones-LeCointe, Rothwell Kentish, and Godfrey Millett. Their trial lasted 55 days and finally they were cleared of the main charge of inciting a riot. This case was significant in that it was the first judicial acknowledgement of racial prejudice in the Metropolitan Police, an issue that is still prevalent to this day. So today we remember the Mangrove Nine, and the other protestors who took to the streets of Notting Hill calling for justice. #MangroveNine #NottingHillProtest #BlackCommunity #RacialJustice #NottingHillHistory
