🩸 Haematologist Dr. Dang speaks out on an overburdened workforce. Critical staff shortages within the NHS are placing immense pressure on healthcare professionals. Too many skilled professionals are leaving the workforce, while too few are being encouraged to join it. Despite the challenges, we firmly believe that the current blood cancer work force are doing an exceptional job in unacceptable circumstances. But people with blood cancer need a sufficient and supported workforce to receive a timely diagnosis and the best standard of care. We had an inspiring evening in Holyrood last night bringing our UK Blood Cancer Action Plan to the Scottish Parliament, sharing our recommendations to address blood cancer survival in the UK. We're pleased so many MSP's joined & our blood cancer community could share why this work is so vital. Huge thanks to our three speakers, Trustee Ally Boyle, Cabinet Secretary for Health Neil Gray MSP, and Miles Briggs MSP who also sponsored the event.

📢 Today a government-commissioned report has highlighted critical challenges facing the NHS. In response, the PM has announced a 10-year plan to reform the NHS. Many of the issues identified in Lord Darzi’s report mirror the challenges we identify in our UK Blood Cancer Action Plan. Whether it’s an overburdened and under-resourced workforce, or delays to diagnosis – the result is clear, blood cancer survival in the UK is being overshadowed by other, similar countries. We’re now urging the Government and the NHS to commit to the recommendations set out in our Action Plan. 💬 Responding to this news, Dr Rubina Ahmed, Director of Research, Policy and Services at Blood Cancer UK, said: “Unfortunately, it won’t come as a surprise to people with blood cancer that the NHS is in critical condition. We know that healthcare professionals supporting people with blood cancer are doing an exceptional job in unacceptable circumstances. “We welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to take bold action to reform our NHS. Our UK Blood Cancer Action plan, published last week, sets out clear recommendations which will ensure that people with blood cancer aren’t overlooked. We’re urging the Government and the NHS to enact these recommendations, so we can create a brighter future for people with blood cancer.” [image taken from The Guardian]

"I was finally diagnosed after 3 years of symptoms” Sound familiar? It’s a story we hear all too often, because there is a lack of understanding of what blood cancer is. Our recommendations can help the NHS to close the diagnosis gap. These include developing urgent referral pathways for patients with unclear blood cancer symptoms to avoid misdiagnosis. Have your experiences of diagnosis made you feel left in the shadows? Find out what we're doing about it here 👇 https://bit.ly/4d7Rs2C

🚨 Did you know that more than 1/4 of blood cancers are only diagnosed in an emergency? GPs may suspect their patient has blood cancer, but the symptoms often don't fit a referral pathway. Patients who aren't directed towards urgent referral experience severe and sometimes life-threatening delays in diagnosis. This can have devastating consequences, including: ❌ Fewer treatment options ❌ Poorer quality of life ❌ Potential for reduced life expectancy Learn more about delayed diagnosis, and help us create a brighter future for people with blood cancer 👇 https://bit.ly/3XhDKo2 #BloodCancerOvershadowed

Too many people are still dying from blood cancer, and the UK is now falling behind similar countries when it comes to survival. Why does this matter? Because these numbers represent lives lost, and patients left without the care they desperately need. We set out to understand why this is happening, to learn more about the experiences of people living with blood cancer and understand more about the pressures people who provide blood cancer care and treatment face. We’ve got a plan, informed by a group of blood cancer experts, to take blood cancer out of the shadows and help create a brighter future for people affected. Find out more 👉 https://bit.ly/47b6eV7 Video consists of 4 square slides, white text on maroon background. 1. The UK cancer survival rates lag behind the European average in 9 out of 10 cancers. 2. 1 in 3 people with blood cancer don't know the name of their clinical nurse specialist. 3. 1 in 4 people with blood cancer are diagnosed in an emergency setting. 4. Leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood disorders are the UK's 5th most common cancer, but awareness remains shockingly low.
