We’re taking a bloody break! 🩸 Over the next 6 weeks, Team BGP will be taking a purposeful strategic pause in our communications and campaigns, starting August 8th 2024. But don’t worry babes, we’ll be back in mid-September!  We’re so grateful for the amazing support we’ve received from yourselves and our brilliant community so far. This year, we have donated over 53k packs of period products to people who bleed! As huge as our impact has been, we have decided to take a short break to develop more brilliant plans for our future campaigns. As a small team, we need to focus on rest and wellbeing to ensure we can continue to drive our mission forward effectively. Inspired by the likes of Glitch, Level Up and other activist movements, we recognise the power of taking a step back to refocus and strategise. We’re taking this time to ensure our work is *even more* impactful and to allow us to fight for menstrual equity with renewed energy moving forward. During this break, our social media activity will be significantly reduced. However, we’ll still promote our Bloody Funny event (get your tickets here babes: https://lnkd.in/enU3ZSXF). We’ll be back refreshed, with a fresh cycle of ideas and a bold plan to drive our campaigns forward in the right direction, for all people who bleed.  Thank you so much for your understanding and continued support – it means the world to us, period. Stay tuned for any updates and see you all in September - both online and in-person at Bloody Funny! ❤️ BGP Team x

Enjoying the sunshine with donations! ☀️ We’re bloody chuffed to share that over June and July, our friends at Modibodi generously donated 335 packs of period pants!🩸 These pants, (which our fab Education & Operations Manager, Naz, is pictured holding) have been carefully packaged and sent over to our amazing community partners across Ipswich, Essex, London, West Midlands and Leeds. We’re so grateful for the ongoing support and for ensuring that people who bleed have access to the period products that they need. Thanks so bloody much, Modibodi! #Modibodi #Donation #Donate #Charity #PeriodPants #Periods

We’re horrified by the recent violence and misinformation targeting people seeking asylum, refugees, and immigrants across England and Northern Ireland after the tragic stabbing in Southport on 29 July 2024. Our hearts go out to all those affected by these senseless acts of violence. The spread of harmful misinformation and the resulting riots highlight the dangers of xenophobia, Islamophobia, and anti-immigrant sentiment. Words matter, and we are seeing the effects of divisive language. These violent actions haven't emerged from a vacuum—they've been fueled by hostile asylum policies and stoked by political rhetoric and the media. This not only threatens public safety but also deepens divisions in our communities. People seeking asylum came to the UK seeking safety, only to be facing rising violence and hate here. These individuals are already more likely to face menstrual inequity and now, the threat of far-right attacks means they can't even leave their hotels safely, let alone to get basic necessities. It’s a terrifying reality that strips them of their autonomy and agency. The UK has a legal and moral obligation to provide a safe, welcoming, and humane asylum to those fleeing violence and persecution. The current climate of hostility and violence is a disgrace, scapegoating immigrants and standing in stark contrast to these obligations. Targeting immigrants and asylum seekers with hatred and violence is utterly unacceptable and must be fully condemned. The government needs to step up and take immediate action to protect people seeking asylum. This isn’t just about period products; it’s about basic human rights. Every person deserves autonomy, agency, and a safe place to live and menstruate. BGP team x

Reminder: Periods don’t stop for major competitions 🚫🩸 With #Paris2024 fully underway we wanted to post a quick reminder that menstruation doesn’t stop during major sporting events 🩸 Despite increased visibility of women in sport, and progress in gender equity, menstruation is still a topic rarely discussed amongst athletes. Tess Howard, an England Hockey player, is also the founder of Inclusive Sportswear CIC, an organisation which advocates for inclusive sportswear policies for schools, clubs and sports organisations. Her campaigning work led to a policy change in GB Hockey, allowing women hockey players to choose between skorts and shorts. Having more choice over sportswear is not only more inclusive for those of different cultures and faiths* but can also make athletes feel more comfortable on their period. The ability to wear longer shorts or leggings can provide an extra layer of comfort and protection so athletes don’t have to worry about leaks when they’re competing in a major sporting competition! Pretty bloody important we think! 🩸 We’d love to see more athletes speaking out about periods to help reduce stigma! Let’s support and empower more women athletes to speak openly about their experiences 🙌 *It’s worth pointing out that although this year’s event features more inclusive sportswear options, French sports women are barred from wearing the Hijab, resulting in some Muslim athletes being unable to participate in this year's games. This is despite the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowing international athletes to compete in the hijab, and the fact it is a violation of the commitments and values set out in the IOC’s own human rights framework. #Olympics #Paris2024 #ParisOlympics #WomenInSport #PeriodStigma #PeriodPositive #MenstruationMatters #PeriodPositive

A consultation on the previous government’s proposed changes to Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) closed last week & Bloody Good Period, Irise International, inKind, Cysters, Birmingham City University, All Yours & Love Your Period had a few things to bloody say about it! 🩸 Access to clear, accurate, inclusive, shame-free education in schools is essential to support girls and people who menstruate from an early age. Withholding this information will send young people to social media, where information may not be accurate or supportive. The proposed changes to the RSHE guidelines will exacerbate misinformation, stigma and menstrual inequity. Our joint response included the following feedback: 🔴 Proposed age restrictions on puberty education are too late. Some children start puberty as early as 8 (Year 3) or even before, and need appropriate information and support on what’s happening. 🔴 Comprehensive menstrual health education should be made available to, and include, all genders, and reduce shame and stigma. 🔴 Staff and pupils should learn about menstrual health conditions including endometriosis. 🔴 Access to period products in schools must be improved. 🔴 Provide better training and support for teachers delivering RSHE. 🔴 Regularly review and update guidance. 🔴 Transparent communication with parents. 🔴 Respect and recognise existence and lived experiences of trans, non-binary, and gender diverse individuals. 🔴 Ensure a meaningful increase of student involvement in the consultation process - this latest process was long, unwieldy and coincided with both exams and the end of the academic year, making student involvement difficult to say the least. For changes with such wide ranging effects on young people, that’s unacceptable - which is why our joint response included (anonymous) testimonies submitted by young people as part of the @irise Every Period Counts campaign. #BloodyGoodPeriod #MenstrualEquity #Periods #PeriodPoverty #Government #MenstrualHealth #Schools #Menstruation #MenstruationMatters

BLOODY TOXIC Tampons, clickbait headlines, and a lack of investment in women’s health 🩸. You’ve probably seen the headlines and social media shares: a recent study from the University of California found metal traces in a small sample of tampons. 30 tampons from different organic and non-organic brands were tested for 16 metals, including arsenic, cadmium, and lead. Researchers found these metals were present in all the tampons, leading to understandable public concern, outrage and worry. HOWEVER, Dr. Jen Gunter has broken down why we shouldn’t be panicking, for reasons including: 🩸The sample size isn’t large enough to reflect all tampons  🩸The findings of the study don’t tell us anything about the clinical significance of these trace metals on our bodies (read more here: https://bit.ly/3W6ri9X) We have seen misinformation circulating online from trusted news outlets, influencers, and social media platforms. People are profiting from gaps in women’s health by using buzzwords and misleading headlines to scare people. As Love Your Period put it: “We are so uninformed about our bodies and periods that we are in a mess”. And yes we are bloody angry about the lack of research on the ingredients of period products, as well as their efficacy (remember, it was only last year that products were tested with actual blood - before then, tests used saline!) We shouldn’t have to be concerned about what is in the products we are sold to manage our periods. AND of course this reflects the lack of investment in the health of women and people who menstruate. We recommend you check out these incredible people: Dr. Jen Gunter, Andrea C. Love, Ph.D., and Love Your Period. They have shared lots of bloody good information breaking down the study results, debunking myths, and sharing credible medical resources. The government needs to act now and provide better menstrual health education for everyone, as well as providing an increase in funding for research that benefits women and individuals who menstruate. #Periods #PeriodPositive #PeriodProducts #Menstruation #MenstruationMatters #UKCharity #toxictampons #tamponmetals
