🐟 🌊 EU governments must clamp down on unlawful fishing practices instead of covering up that they aren’t enforcing their own rules. As overfishing persists, we require stricter enforcement to protect ocean health. EU governments need to ensure sustainable fishing practices. Fisheries 🤝 conservation In 2021 the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Association introduced a Byelaw to remove trawling from 300sq km of the Sussex seabed with the aim to protect once thriving fish habitats and local sustainable fisheries. Since then, we have been working with local fishers to monitor the recovery of commercial species in Sussex by surveying crab and lobster populations both in the area which allows trawling and the area where trawling has been removed. With the support of local fishers, we can work to ensure sustainable fisheries thrive. Learn more about this work by watching the film 👉 https://lnkd.in/eG2kQzPF 🎥 - Madison Bowden-Pari

Politicians are back in Parliament following summer recess. But will The Labour Party use its landslide majority to fix the extraordinary neglect of our marine environment? “The inshore fleet is on its knees as a result of the twin evils of lack of access to quota and declining fish populations because of poor management... Britain goes on giving excessive fishing opportunities to a few vessel owners who make extraordinary profits from wiping out one of our last great national resources.” – Charles Clover, Blue Marine co-founder. YOU can help end overfishing. Ask your MP to support setting only sustainable quotas and allocating them more fairly using our #SeasTheDay template 👉 https://lnkd.in/eKT4muye Read more in The Guardian by Charles Clover 👇 https://lnkd.in/ecRRni-P #overfishing #fishing #SeasTheDay #Policy #FishingPolicy Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP, Jonathan Hughes, Aisling McGarrigle, Adrian Gahan, Jo Coumbe

🚨 BREAKING: Maldivian Government support local fishers by deciding not to resume longlining. Today, we welcome the President of the Maldives' announcement to continue to support only one-by-one tuna fisheries, which makes the Maldives one of most sustainable tuna fisheries in the world. This decision means that the Maldives will continue to provide a safe haven for ecologically significant and threatened marine megafauna such as all species of sharks, rays and turtles 🐟 A huge thank you to everyone who signed and shared the petition, YOUR voice helped make this happen. Together we can turn the tide and create a better future for our oceans. ✊ #AgainstLonglining #Sharks Only One, Miyaru - Shark Programme, Alea Laidlaw, Georgina Aldana, Jo Coumbe

🚨Overfishing remains a rampant problem throughout the world. A new investigation, published in the Journal of Science, studied 230 fisheries from around the world and found populations of many overfished species are in far worse condition than has been reported. The investigation also reported that numerous stocks in UK waters have collapsed because of overfishing ❌ The EU and UK have power to change this. The time to act is now. Email your MP and ask them to stop overfishing using our handy #SeasTheDay template 👉 https://lnkd.in/eKT4muye Read more from The Conversation 👉 https://lnkd.in/gUXEZPPC #Overfishing #Investigation #StopOverFishing #MarineConservation #MarineProtection #SaveTheOcean #SeasTheDay #OceanAction #ClimateAction

Sharks are commonly caught on longlines. ❌ The proposed regulation on longlining fishing would allow sharks to be sold which undermines the Maldives’ position as a shark sanctuary. Up to 25% of the total catch in longline tuna fisheries are shark species and many of the sharks are critically endangered. Sharks are especially vulnerable to overfishing since they mature late and have few offspring. Over 29k people have signed the petition, can you help us get to 30k?
