Shining a spotlight on invertebrate science and biological recording.

About us

The Biological Recording Company provide a range of events and consultancy services focused on educating and training biological recorders and biodiversity professionals in the United Kingdom. Biological Recording training and consultancy services include setting up site recording systems and using iRecord, as well as general guidance and delivering Field Recorder Days to engage and inspire new and existing local recorders. Invertebrates are a big focus of our work. Our entoLIVE webinar series of free 1-hour virtual events exploring the science of insects and other invertebrates. Invertebrate Study give volunteers the opportunity to develop their invertebrate ID skills under the guidance of local experts. Earthworms are our specialist group. Our training courses covering topics such as biology, ecology, sampling techniques and identification, and we can provide bespoke webinars on a wide range of earthworm topics. We also provide earthworm consultancy services, such as conservation status assessments, surveying and ID. Virtual Symposiums explore a subject in more detail through a series of talks from subject experts. These longer events have a small charge and are often available with an ‘earlybird’ discount.

  • Rewild London Virtual Symposium 27 Mar 2025 | Virtual Symposium | £1 - £25 London's biodiversity faces pressures such as habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, pollution, invasive species and climate change. Threats to wildlife are exacerbated by a growing population and the resulting planning pressures to accommodate more people within a given area. London became the world’s first National Park City in July 2019, with the aim of creating a city where people, places and nature are better connected. Across the city, innovative projects aspire to create a landscape made up of bigger wildlife havens with improved capacity to support biodiversity that is better connected to one another. Projects range from pan-London projects to local grassroots-led initiatives. We'll hear how four of these projects have engaged Londoners with local wildlife and greenspaces through conservation action. Each project case study will report on the methods undertaken, challenges faced, achievements to date and any lessons learned from the project. The Rewild London Virtual Symposium will be hosted by Elliot Newton (Citizen Zoo) and will feature 4 speakers from projects funded through the Rewild London grant scheme. The presentations will be recorded and shared with those who booked alongside Q&A transcripts and lists of useful links via a password-protected website following the event. • Integrating Climate Resilience with Biodiversity Net Gain 12 Nov 2024 | Julia Baker | Mott MacDonald |💡 Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is achieved by following the Biodiversity Gain Hierarchy and creating wildlife-rich habitats. These BNG habitats are secured for at least 30 years but, during that time, more extreme weather events and changes in climatic trends will threaten the viability of BNG habitats. Designing-in resilience is critical for BNG to be successful and, in this presentation, Julia describes an approach to integrate climate resilience into the design, management and monitoring of BNG habitats. • The Wilder Sensing Guide to Mastering Bioacoustic Bird Surveys 26 Nov 2024 | Free Webinar | 💡 Learn how to effectively plan and conduct bird surveys using bioacoustic methods, utilising sound recorders and cutting-edge AI tools for data analysis and interpretation. Bioacoustics is revolutionising bird monitoring, offering a non-invasive method to record bird activity continuously, even over extended periods, and generating valuable species occurrence, richness and distribution data. In this session, you’ll learn how bioacoustics can reveal critical insights, such as tracking when species arrive at and depart from a site, as well as behavioural patterns through different call types. This webinar will provide practical guidance on setting up sound recorders, tailoring your survey design based on the size of your site and survey objectives, and harnessing the power of AI to process and analyse large volumes of sound data. Hosted by Ella Milne (Ecosystem Analyst at Ecosulis) this event features expert presentations from: Key topics include: - Setting up and managing passive audio recorders for bioacoustics surveys - Designing surveys that fit your needs, budget and site characteristics - Interpreting AI-processed sound data to uncover species behaviour, distribution and richness The webinar will be recorded and those booked will receive a link to the recording. This event is being delivered by the Biological Recording Company in partnership with Wilder Sensing (Geoff Carss), Wildlife Acoustics, Inc. and NHBS. • Biodiversity Net Gain and Invertebrates: Are We Getting It Right? 14 Apr 2025 | entoLIVE webinar | Free | 🗣️ Join Natalie Duffus (University of Oxford) presents her research into the ecological outcomes from biodiversity offsetting. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an ambitious environmental policy which aims to reconcile the impacts of infrastructural development on nature and leave the environment in a measurably better state. In this presentation, Natalie will be discussing what BNG is, how it is measured, as well as her research into the possible ecological outcomes of BNG for invertebrates. Natalie Duffus is a PhD student from the Department of Biology at the University of Oxford. Natalie's research looks at the ecological outcomes from biodiversity offsetting policies, with a current focus on Biodiversity Net Gain in England. Her recent work has been exploring the possible outcomes of BNG in England for invertebrates. • 🦉 Wilder Sensing: An Ecologist's Perspective Presentation | Kate Downes | Ethos Environmental Planning Traditional field surveys are essential for understanding which species of bird are present on a site and how they are using it. However, these surveys only provide a snapshot in time and are limited by cost and field surveyor availability. Bioacoustic monitoring can monitor a site year-round but may miss things that field surveyors would detect. Kate will discuss how Ethos Environmental Planning has developed a hybrid programme of bioacoustic and field surveys for undertaking ornithological site monitoring. • Invasive Plants of the UK 17 Dec 2024 | Skills For Ecology Webinar | £10 |🗣️ Invasive plant species are non-native plants that have a proven ability to spread and cause severe problems for native UK plants and the environment, costing the UK economy an estimated £4 billion per year. Under UK law, it is an offence to import, keep, breed, transport, sell, grow or cultivate listed invasive alien plant species. Recognising these species is an important skills for any ecologist, conservationist, ranger or site manager. During this webinar, we'll provide an overview of the 8 species of invasive plants that are listed by the UK government as being widely spread in England and Wales. We will cover how to recognise these species and differentiate them from potential confusion species. We'll also delve into the type of environment that you might expect to find them within. The species covered include: - American skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanus) - Chilean rhubarb (Gunnera tinctoria) - Curly waterweed (Lagarosiphon major) - Floating pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides) - Giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) - Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) - Nuttall’s waterweed (Elodea nuttalli) - Parrot’s feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum) This webinar will focus on recognising invasive plant species and not cover control methods. The 90-minute event will consist of a 1-hour presentation followed by a Q&A with the tutor using questions provided by the live audience. The presentations will be recorded and shared with those who booked alongside Q&A transcripts and relevant links following the event via a password-protected website.
