First hand experiences in the outdoors

About us

Field Studies Council is an environmental education charity. Founded in 1943, we are best known for providing residential and day field trips for those studying biology and geography. But our mission is to create outstanding opportunities for everyone to learn about nature. We are the only environmental education charity dedicated to helping people of all ages to experience the environment at first hand; to discover, explore and be inspired by the natural world. Each year over 140,000 people visit our Centres either as a child on a family holiday, a young person on a school fieldtrip, an adult on a leisure learning course or a teacher on a professional development course.

Generation Green 2 🧒 💚 🌲 We are excited to be playing a crucial role in helping young disadvantaged students connect with nature as part of a major £4.5 million project. We are one of a number of key organisations helping to deliver the Generation Green 2 project, which by next spring will have enabled more than 41,500 day and overnight nature connection experiences to young people who would otherwise miss out on opportunities to spend time outdoors in beautiful landscapes. 🌍 Over recent months, we’ve already seen students' eyes widen, horizons expand, and possibilities multiply for their future relationship with the natural environment. 🌲 With many more schools set to benefit from this Defra-funded initiative, we're hoping that we can show these young people that nature can not only provide a lifetime of enjoyment and wellbeing, but how it can also offer opportunities for incredible future study and fulfilling careers.♻️ We are really pleased to be playing a part in their journey of discovery. 👉 Find out more: https://buff.ly/4dZDnVe #GenerationGreen2 #DEFRA #Education #SchoolTrip #FieldTrip #Nature #Environment #Outdoors

We were honoured to be involved with The National Gallery newest exhibition, 'Discover Constable and The Hay Wain'. The exhibition is celebrating 200 years of the iconic Constable painting and the team at Flatford Mill were involved in a special press day at our field centre in Suffolk. Members of the press travelled to Flatford Mill to see the view of Willy Lotts Cottage for themselves and received a tour of Flatford, starting at the neighbouring National Trust site. Flatford inspired some of Constable's most famous works. Here is a lovely photo of Claire Madder who is the Administrator at Flatford Mill. Claire is heavily involved in the creation of Flatford's creative calendar of courses and got the chance to attend the opening of the exhibition on our behalf. She was given the chance to offer her knowledge and insight into this very famous view to exhibition visitors, and got to enjoy seeing the original painting. To find out more about the exhibition (which is open until 2nd February 2025) visit the National Gallery's website: https://buff.ly/40f0yaU #Suffolk #Constable #JohnConstable #NationalGallery #ArtExhibition

Why study plants in urban spaces? 🍃 🏢 🌸 The study of botany has been implemented for centuries, and although typically associated with rural environments, many species of plants can be readily found within urban environments. By observing and appreciating urban plants, individuals can discover the resilience and beauty of nature thriving in unexpected places, gain a deeper understanding of biodiversity in cities, and foster a sense of environmental stewardship in their own communities. 🍃 🌱 Learn about urban botany with our expert tutor, Amanda Tuke, on the 12th of November for her live webinar. 💻 Find out more 👉 https://buff.ly/3Z6cfQH #Botany #Botanical #Plants #Flowers #UrbanBotany

We are so pleased with the possibility of the new #CurriculumForWales being an opportunity to embed outdoor education as an integral part of the learning experience. Meaningful, enriching and immersive experiences for all students regardless of their age, background or ability is something we've been striving for since the Field Studies Council began over 80 years ago. We urge teachers to embrace outdoor learning as an integral part of the new curriculum as it aims to create the healthy and ambitious young people needed to move our society ahead.💪 👉 Read more about the new curriculum here: https://buff.ly/4eMdqtw #WelshCurriculum #Wales #OutdoorLearning #Outdoors #Nature #Enviroment #Cymru

Step outside the door and look closely at the surfaces around you. Look out for almost circular paint-like patches on the pavement, on walls, on the bark of trees and on roofs. Lichens do not look like typical green plants. They also lack leaves. Many lichens have distinctive colours, from white, yellow and grey to green and brown. They are composite organisms, made up of fungus and one or more algae living together. For one thing, the algal partner produces essential nutrients through photosynthesis. At the same time, the fungal partner provides the body in which the algae live. We have a great range of guides to help you identify lichens in different habitats: 🪵The Lichens on twigs guide will help you identify 60 of the commonest lichens found growing on trees and shrubs in Britain! 🌳The Urban lichens 1 guide features 49 lichens found growing on trees and wood, including sawn wood. 🏬 The Urban lichens 2 guide features 49 lichens found growing on stone and soil. ⛰️ The Lichens of heaths and moors guide will help you identify 62 of the commonest lichens from dry sandy heaths to wet peaty moorland. 🪸 The Rocky shore lichens guide features 62 common species of lichen found on rocky sea shores, from the low tide mark up to the limit of sea spray. ⛪ The Churchyard lichens guide will help you identify over 50 of the commonest lichens found in churchyards in Britain. 🔬 The Lichen based index to nitrogen air quality guide features a straightforward key to lichens growing on oak and birch that you can use to assess local air quality. All our lichen identification guides are illustrated with colour photographs throughout. The reverse side includes an easy-to-use visual lichen identification key. The guides are laminated to be splashproof in our ever-changing weather! Get your guide: https://buff.ly/3zYGKy3 #Lichens #Ecology #Plants #Fungi
