Trenders Avenue was a commission to design and manufacture a glulam portal frame for a private residence in Kent. The frame was covered in insulated composite panels to form the external facade of the house, creating a streamlined and industrial look and feel. Made using Spruce glulam, the frame was connected using galvanised flitch plate connections. The project went from design to construction on site in eight weeks, with the on-site construction taking just a week!

Anyone else looking at this house project in the South of England and dreaming of warmer weather?!! This shot was taken during the installation of some UK-grown Larch curved glulam. We're particularly skilled at curved glulam - we make our curved beams by clamping glued lamella around an arrangement of clamp frames bolted to the floor. Then, we adjust either the clamp layout or the thickness of the timber used to create differing radii. If you're looking to add character or individuality to your build, curved design is a great way to do this. Not a bad bit of engineering this. A glulam portal frame spanning across the property to provide stability with two cantilevered members running down the side elevations that will eventually house a wrap around glazed façade. Phone call from the client on site today after the props came out (no movement - bonus) - they're really pleased with it and we're really pleased because they're really pleased with it. This should look cracking once its finished in a few months. We acted as Principal Engineer here as well as taking on the connection design for the timber elements which was checked and supplied by Buckland Timber. Frame erected by MINT Construction (Bedford) LTD - massive props for installing that in the weather we've recently been having as well. One of our goals last year was how to share our expertise more widely, and in a way which might be most helpful to people wishing to specify more timber for their projects. As a result, we collated our knowledge, to answer preliminary design considerations, beam sizing, connection details, and timber species selection into a CPD programme. We repeatedly cover similar ground, helping architects and engineers make informed decisions early in their design process, so it also made sense to seek formal accreditation - we are delighted to share we are now a RIBA-accredited CPD provider. #ThowbackThursday to some spruce glulam pitched curved beams for a project This project was for a swimming pool on the Isle of Wight. In this photo, you can just about see the pool through the glulam frame! Glulam is a popular choice for buildings with pools, particularly public pools or schools. It performs better against the corrosive atmosphere in a pool than other materials. The chemicals and chlorine in the water attack the surface of whatever your frame is made of, and glulam tends to hold up much better than, say, steel against corrosion. #glulam #swimmingpool
