Buro Happold is proud to contribute to the first “Industry Collections” list of low-carbon building materials on Europe’s leading materials data platform revalu. A number of companies in the building industry such as architects, planners, developers and contractors were approached to compile a list of nature-based and emerging building materials that they may have already used in projects or materials that they are generally interested in using. Our engineers Joanna Hedley-Smith, Anika Buchmaier and Felicitas L. were involved in the project, with support from Jonathan Roynon, Technical Director at Buro Happold Bath. revalu is an open online materials database. The main goal of the platform is to make data-driven decisions more accessible across the industry, sharing knowledge, references and best practice to accelerate the path towards a low-carbon future. It helps professionals from the building industry who are considering using low-carbon alternatives to conventional building materials to find, compare and specify them. The list launches today and it shows a collection of materials that we have either successfully used in projects or are interested in learning more about in the future. Buro Happold’s multidisciplinary team is working closely with architects KPF to support the development of highly flexible designs for One North Quay, which will be Europe’s largest and most technologically advanced commercial speculative life sciences building. This vertical laboratory campus at Canary Wharf sets ambitious sustainability targets and will become an iconic presence at the heart of North Quay. We were engaged to deliver specialist consultancy around building services engineering (MEP), sustainability, ICT and laboratory planning. The development is a joint venture between Canary Wharf Group and specialist laboratory developer Kadans Science Partner. The client wanted the project to be a showcase of sustainability – achieving net zero carbon in line with UKGBC, working to the design-for-performance guidance of NABERS certification for operational energy, as well as meeting all the latest GLA requirements around embodied carbon and circular economy considerations. Are developers getting a fair deal when it comes to connecting via Distribution Network Operators (DNOs)? Chris Glover, Director of the Total Utilities Management Team, talks to Utility Week about the current rules around connections and calls for a consistent application of these in order to level the playing field for developers. This includes revisiting the changes under Ofgem’s Access SCR and the Connections Action Plan – specifically what’s working and not. He references an example where Buro Happold saved a customer £200,000 because the policy of that particular DNO meant that this figure was the difference in the cost they quoted and the cheapest option. “The DNO has a legal obligation to present customers with the cheapest solution. Yet prices vary and for no logical reason because the cost of electricity is the same. This means considering a full reform of DNO policies to ensure that developers are quoted the same price, regardless of where they are in the country. This is an area where our knowledge and experience is particularly helpful.” Read the full article here https://lnkd.in/gn3YhDCv For more information or to get some of your development connection questions answered, contact Chris Glover or Will Ryan #utilities #electricityconnections #development #builtenvironment

How can we all work together for a more equitable energy future in the UK? And what can the individual actually do? Find out what’s in our ‘Power’ in this week’s ‘Sandbox’ FOMO5… The final FOMO5 from our third ‘Sandbox’ episode, ‘Powering On – Energy: Past, Present and Future’, explores what we as individuals can do to make a difference to how the UK could be powered. Renewables make up 40% of electricity in the UK, with many people already making more sustainable energy choices. Buro Happold experts Maddie McTaggart and Ben Jones discuss the changes they have made in their own lives, from heat pumps to solar panels and EVs. A key theme throughout this episode, was that it’s not ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to energy use and production. Professor Iwan Rhys Morus said: “I grew up watching Star Trek and things like that. I mean, I'm still waiting for my jet pack being able to fly around everywhere! That's what I was promised as a kid watching TV.” Maddie called for more education to help better understand the difference that we can all make to change the course of our current energy consumption, which ultimately needs collective effort from everyone. Maddie said: “For example, in my house, we've got nine solar panels, which if you're not using them, feed into the grid. So, the grid gets the green energy. But what I have done is utilised that energy to heat up the water as a priority and then use it, and if not, I'll give it back to the grid.” Iwan concluded, saying: “We can only create equitable energy futures ourselves, for ourselves.” This episode features Buro Happold engineering experts Maddie McTaggart and Ben Jones, special guest professor and published author, Iwan Rhys Morus, plus, of course, our inimitable host Andy Duncan. Listen to the full episode, as well as its accompanying FOMO5s, on all the usual platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube. In September Buro Happold will be celebrating the completion of one of our most eagerly anticipated projects in Europe. The garden roof of the Centro de Arte Moderna (CAM) at the Gulbenkian Gardens in Lisbon, Portugal will be officially unveiled to the public. The construction of the elegantly sweeping roof is part of a reimagining of the centre commissioned by the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, envisioned by renowned Japanese architects Kengo Kuma & Associates and engineered by Buro Happold. In celebration of the centre’s reopening on September 20, there will be a return of “Engawa”, an intense programme of contemporary art from Japan, with exhibitions, performances, concerts, poetry sessions, debates and other artistic practices, including exhibitions by Go Watanabe and Yasuhiro Morinaga. Well worth a visit we think. Find the opening programme here: Opening programme - Centro de Arte Moderna (gulbenkian.pt) Buro Happold engineers took on the challenge to translate the architectural vision into a stable, buildable and economic engineering design. Industrial placements at Buro Happold offer opportunities for university students to work on real life projects, learning and making a tangible difference to exceptional engineering projects around the world. For Kanta Sibbett, the built environment has had a profound importance in his life since childhood. Growing up in Osaka, Japan, Kanta’s father was based in the Umeda Sky Building when it withstood the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake. The building’s resilience peaked Kanta’s curiosity about the power of design to protect people’s lives. We spoke to Kanta about his experience in the structural engineering team, from the events leading to his placement to his personal and professional development. Bridges provide lifelines for millions of people all over the world. Never more so than for the Mubuga-Nyarunyinya community in western Rwanda. During the rainy reason the local Mashyiga river swells to dangerous levels, sweeping away makeshift wooden bridges, cutting people off from vital critical resources such as markets, health centre and school. The result is rural isolation, one of the root causes of poverty. That’s why Buro Happold partners with Bridges to Prosperity, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to constructing bridges in rural communities to reduce poverty and isolation. In May eight Buro Happold volunteers from our European office went to Rwanda to help build a 62-metre suspended bridge spanning the Mashyiga river to provide a safe and reliable crossing for a community of about 9,000 people, linking them to healthcare, education, and economic as well as social opportunities. Read our report about the challenges they’ve had to overcome during the build and the impact the bridge will make to the local community. https://buro.im/4clcGK1 #burohappold #engineering #volunteering #bridges #BridgestoProsperity Gry Haxholm Malte Simon Sabrina Autrata Vera Sluijter Slawomir Pastuszka Lilian Dayekh Joanne Jimmink Rafał Bukowski

On this World Humanitarian Day, 19th August, CARE is spotlighting six incredible women leaders helping to save lives in some of the world’s largest emergencies. From Gaza to Sudan, Nepal to Haiti, they shared what needs to be done to improve security for female aid workers and better support women and girls facing crises. One thing they all agreed on: engaging more women in humanitarian responses is vital. Their unique perspective helps to provide tailored support for entire communities, especially women and girls. Buro Happold is proud to partner with CARE International UK to support its response and emergency shelter work in disaster-affected communities around the world.
