The Oak Beauty lives up to its name, with large, feathered antennae and beautiful mottled patterns on its wings which help it blend in with the trees it lives in. The moth tends to favour mature Oak woodland as its caterpillars feast on Oaks and a host of other trees, including Hazel, Alder, Elms and other broadleaved trees and shrubs. 🌳 📷: Hannah Rowsell, Philip Barry Forsyth, Mark Parsons #MothMonday #MothsMatter

We are a leading wildlife charity working across the UK to conserve butterflies, moths and our environment.
About us
Butterfly Conservation is a leading charity and the world’s largest organisation dedicated to the conservation of butterflies and moths. Our mission is to halt and then reverse the decline of butterflies and moths. By achieving this goal we can help create a healthier environment in which we all can live. Butterflies and moths are a vital part of our wildlife heritage and they are valuable indicators of the health of our environment. Our surveys reveal that they continue to decline at a rate that is faster than most other well-documented groups of plants and animals. Our work will benefit other wildlife and the ecosystems upon which all life depends. Butterfly Conservation’s research advises people how to conserve and restore habitats. We run programmes for more than 100 threatened species and are involved in conserving hundreds of sites and reserves. To find out more about our work and how you can get involved or become a member please visit www.butterfly-conservation.org.

A banquet for butterflies 🌳 The mighty Willow is a firm favourite for many butterfly and moth species. As many as 130 different types of caterpillar feed on Willow, including the stunning Puss Moth! 🐛 Look out for spring butterflies, like this Peacock, visiting the catkins (flowers) on sunny afternoons in March and early April. They are also irresistible to moths flying by night.

The abundance of butterflies across the United States fell by an alarming 22% in just 20 years, a new study has concluded 📉 The results mirror the picture in the UK, where 80% of butterfly species have decreased in abundance, distribution or both since the 1970s. Butterfly Conservation Head of Science Richard Fox said: "These results from the US are hugely concerning, and help to prove that butterflies are declining across the whole world at an alarming rate. "As the authors of this paper point out, we already know the major causes of butterfly decline - habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use. We sounded the alarm about butterfly declines 25 years ago, and that's why Butterfly Conservation is working with landowners across the UK to protect butterflies and moths, raising awareness about climate change and successfully campaigning for stricter regulation of dangerous pesticides."
