As reported in The Herald Scotland at the weekend, we are involved in transforming the old Magnet showroom building in Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street into contemporary, flexible, office space. The building’s façade has been redesigned and the windows are being replaced, allowing for more natural light and natural ventilation; sustainable materials will be used throughout. The ground floor retail units will remain, providing noodles and deserts to complement some great coffee across the street in McLellan Works. Our Managing Director, Mark Alcorn, and Design Director, Jean Camplisson, spoke to scott wright. Jean explained: “It has been called MAGwrx. The first two floors are going to be subdivided into serviced offices, and at the third floor we are going to insert these lovely balconies, which will be really nice for the tenants and actually leave it as a ‘Cat A’ building for a single business. It will have these great views.” The building is situated opposite McLellan Works, where our team have designed tailored workspaces for three very different clients, as well as the reception and other communal areas. Thanks to Andy Cunningham from @mc2-offices with whom we have been working closely to deliver this project on behalf of landlords, Lujo Properties. #workspace #workspacedesign #corporateinteriors #design

Our MD, Mark Alcorn, goes back a long way with designer Matt Cox. They started out together at the GMW Partnership in 1985 and have maintained a close working relationship to this day. As Mark says: "Matt is fabulous designer and I love it when he occasionally (very) posts his projects, which are always tasteful and usually pretty tasty too. "When we first started working together, Matt was in a great team looking after the company brand and graphics. GMW was a groundbreaking architecture firm formed in 1947. Being in the interiors team, we often needed his help with our presentation graphics and so on. "Gollins, Melvin, Ward (as the firm was known initially) was an early adopter of curtain walling systems in its office buildings. "The company created the award-winning Commercial Union and P&O towers in the City of London, the HQ for Barclays Bank in Lombard Street, additions to the Royal Opera House as well as the St Enoch Centre in Glasgow. "When I founded c2:concepts in 2003, Matt was immediately on call to develop our "considered, creative" brand. He continues to work with us to this day, but it should also be mentioned (because it's not on his profile) that he took a spell out of design in the 1990's to work in some top west end restaurants. He is a fantastic cook. "It is therefore not surprising that as well as working with corporates on their brand and communications projects, he also works with well known chefs (no name-dropping here...) and respected food writers, designing their amazing and beautiful books." Independent Designer of Books and Brands

I’ve written before about the commercial design process and about how it is hopefully always a collaborative one, the happiest outcomes being when everyone involved in a project is proud of that outcome. There are often many layers of approval, decision making and influences and so to negotiate a creative process through these, to reach a final solution that everyone is proud to hang their hat on is incredibly rewarding. With this in mind however it’s perfectly natural for a creative to lament the loss of some thoughts and ideas along the way and occasionally I highlight these thoughts as an illustration of my alternative thinking. The covers here are a case in point. 'Plants for Bees' ended up with a paper wrap and a more ‘commercial’ design approach but I still love this more elegant and restrained slightly academic look. The original preferred visual route for 'Butter, a celebration' was to feature the starting point for all of the recipes, a block of golden butter, with gentle knife strokes adding texture and reference, and for 'The Self Sufficiency Garden' I loved the reference to the Haynes Manuals or IKEA step-by-step guides as the book is a brilliantly thought out pragmatic guide to building your own garden. You can see the final covers on my site...

As our MD Mark Alcorn says, we are really pleased delighted with the way that this property lends itself to the office studio approach. Our design team have loved designing another project in this great location. Thanks to #mc2offices for bringing c2:concepts on board.

The team here at c2:concepts has been collaborating on a brilliant scheme which centres around the regeneration of a well-known building on Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street. The old Magnet showroom faces onto McLellan Works, another fantastic collaborative project on which we have worked in recent years. As you can see from our rendered images of MAGWRX on Aitken Turnbull Architects' post below, this tired 1980s building is about to enter the 21st century and become a key player in the regeneration of this famous old Glasgow street.

MAGWRX has been a great project for Aitken Turnbull Architects to be involved with, featuring a dynamic team and approach to producing a sustainable build. Our clients at LUJO PROPERTIES LIMITED, supported by leasing agents MC²,  have formed a design team to help reinstate city presence as part of the Sauchiehall Street Regeneration. A collaborative design process between c2:concepts and Aitken Turnbull Architects aims to retain the fabric of a city centre building with sustainable, low-carbon features. This is further supported by the energy-driven design proposed by Harley Haddow Engineers and project managed by MacKinnon & Co. Chartered Building Surveyors . The focused team is working towards an efficient approach that aligns with our client's vision of a tech-smart, sustainable building. We look forward to sharing more as the project evolves. #glasgowcitycouncil #investinglasgow #sauchiehallstreetregeneration   Rendered images credited to C2:Concepts.

Our team spent an inspiring couple of days at Clerkenwell Design Week, an annual design festival in London. It’s always a great opportunity to pick up on new design trends and products from a range of British and international companies. Featuring more than 600 showroom events and 11 exhibitions, there were also talks and installations, as well as chances to network with other industry professionals. At c2:concepts we like to be aware of what’s on offer for the range of clients we work with across a wide variety of sectors. #designweek #trends #products #international #clerkenwelldesignweek #beinspired

We're really pleased to tell you that c2:concepts has been shortlisted for a British Council for Offices (BCO) award in recognition of the sterling work our team carried out for The Student Loans Company in Darlington in the North East of England. The organisation has occupied the Memphis building since 2008. Built in the 1940s as a wool production facility, our designers were asked to refresh the space, hence the nomination in the BCO category, ‘Refurbished/recycled Workplace'. Our designs took contemporary working practices into account and employee needs, blending form and function. To support neurodiverse colleagues, we introduced biophilia (greenery to promote well-being), tactile fabrics, quiet spaces and other initiatives such as alternative work settings. We carried a number of discovery sessions with more than a hundred staff members, who are based based in the building. The aim of this was to identify which parts of the building still worked well and which required attention. This was a departure from the normal design process used for other fit outs, in which design is developed in isolation and then presented to colleagues for feedback. One of the key benefits of this way of working is the level of buy-in achieved and the opportunity for employees to highlight particular challenges. The SLC was keen to offer as much future proofing as possible and so our design team asked staff to think about how they may operate in five to ten years’ time. We suggested moving away from separate areas for various departments to a single fluid floorspace, with the same desk and amenities spread across the building. This allows departments to move, grow or shrink without having to make substantial changes to the space. We’d like to thank everyone involved in this project. – 3Fold provided workplace consultancy and furniture – Project management was carried out by PMPHarley Haddow supplied mechanical and electrical services. The BCO lunch to determine the winner will take place this Thursday 9 May in Manchester. #interiordesign #workplacedesign #accessibility #inclusion #neurodiversity #c2concepts #creativesolutions
