The Camborne School of Mines Association is the world's premier Mining Alumni organisation. Formed by, and for, all former students of the School, CSMA is an independent, self-governing and entirely self-financing organisation that works to support CSM, it's students and members. Former students have traditionally had very close links with each other and with the Camborne School of Mines. Sport has always played a very important part of the life of the School. The CSM RFC and CSM AFC have each celebrated their Centenary years and are among the oldest football clubs in the UK. The major social functions throughout the year are the 'Barrel Match' where current students play past students at rugby, soccer, hockey and squash and the 'Bottle Match' where CSM plays its old adversary, the Royal School of Mines (RSM) for a black, battered, metal bottle. There are currently around 1,000 members around the world, who receive three newsletters per year and a copy of the CSM Association Journal, which has been published since 1896. The Association helps to organise social functions throughout the world. Functions have been organised in Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Jo'burg and Vancouver, to name but a few. The Association maintains a database of former students, so we can help to keep you in touch with each other, wherever you are. About half the members are residing or working overseas, particularly in Australia, Malaysia, Southern Africa, West Africa, and in the US and Canada. Many being employed in production mining, or in exploration, in tunnelling, civil engineering, quarrying, or in associated financial institutions. There used to be a saying that at the bottom of every hole in the world you would find a Cornishman; they may not now be a Cornishman, but it is likely that you will meet someone who has graduated from CSM.

Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter would once again like to express our gratitude to Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon for their continued support in providing us the latest set of equipment to support our educational and research activities as part of our ongoing partnership. This equipment is set to be put to work next week with the start of the undergraduate survey practical's for our undergraduate Geologists and later in the year for our Mining degree apprentices, amongst others. Lots of red boxes - Looks like we might need a bigger survey store!!! Dr Peter Hackett, former Principal of the CSM 1970-1994 passed away peacefully on the 24th September 2024 after being taken ill a few days before. At almost 91, he lived a totally independent retirement and was still getting involvedwith the CSM on occasion and driving his beloved Lancia Fulvia around the county on a regular basis. Very interesting development in the United States 🇺🇸 concerning mining education.
Yesterday, the Senate unanimously passed the Mining Schools Act in a bipartisan fashion. The Mining Schools Act aims to enhance the capabilities of mining schools to recruit and train students in geology, engineering, and energy development. The next generation of the U.S. mining workforce will play a crucial role in securing domestic supply chains with responsibly produced minerals and will play a vital role in filling the jobs needed for mining projects moving into production. In 2020, U.S. mining and mineral engineering schools awarded only 327 degrees. In comparison, China graduates over 5,000 students annually. Chief Responsible Investment Officer (CRIO) Church of England Pensions Board, Chair Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030, Member UN Secretary General's Advisory Panel on Critical Transition Minerals
The Church of England Pensions Board, a UK asset owner and a long-term shareholder in Anglo American has today issued a statement on potential takeover bids for Anglo: “The Church of England Pensions Board is concerned by the long-term risks posed to asset owners’ interests from any proposed takeover of Anglo American. Anglo is a globally significant diversified mining company that operates in key parts of the world, particularly in some important emerging and developing markets, and seeks to do so to the highest standards. Losing Anglo as a distinct entity may serve short-term financial interests, but as an asset owner we are not convinced that such consolidation will serve our long-term interests as a pension fund. Our position is not in any way a judgement of any company making a bid for Anglo, but rather a call for greater reflection by institutional investors as to what is at stake and at risk of being lost. Mining has an absolutely vital role to play over the coming decades to provide the critical resources for the low carbon transition and other industrial activity, and we question if losing Anglo is the right market response. We need more companies like Anglo that are willing to grasp the opportunities of operating in emerging and developing markets such as Africa, not fewer. Seeing it swallowed up would risk damaging the enhanced role mining could play in key economies especially in Africa. The sector benefits from there being a race to the top among the major mining companies, and consolidation at this level removes a key actor in pursuit of a socially and environmentally responsible mining sector. Anglo has played a distinct role in driving best practice and was one of the first to support institutional investor calls for a different approach following the Brumadinho tailings disaster. It recognised that the social license of the sector was under threat and that the key to addressing challenging issues and building trust required multi-stakeholder approaches. It is also Anglo that has championed the development of a multi-stakeholder approach to standards through initiatives such as IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance . As a UK pension fund we are keen that the LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) remains a premium market for mining companies. Rather than the prospect of losing Anglo, it would perhaps be more appropriate to consider what enhanced role Anglo and other companies could play in benefitting local and national populations, generating broader long term value and supporting economic development in mineral rich countries.” Adam Matthews, Chief Responsible Investment Officer for the £3.5bn Church of England Pensions Board. https://lnkd.in/dbfUSq4A
