We’re the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) and we’re taking a stand against suicide.

About us

The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against suicide, the single biggest killer of men aged under 45 in the UK. Free, confidential helpline 0800585858 & webchat open 5pm-12am daily. What we do... Frontline services Anyone can hit crisis point. We run a free and confidential helpline and webchat – 7 hours a day, 7 days a week for anyone who needs to talk about life’s problems. We support those bereaved by suicide, through the Support After Suicide Partnership (SASP). Communities Together we’ll help our boys, our dads, our mums, brothers, sisters, friends and colleagues. We spread our message and facilitate supportive spaces in workplaces, universities, pubs, clubs and prisons across the country – so that people feel empowered to share their experiences and get the help they need before they reach the point of crisis. Campaigns Everyone has a part to play. We campaign with media partners, brands and ambassadors to spread awareness of suicide and its devastating impact with campaigns like #Project84, #DontBottleItUp and The Best Man Project. We challenge boring male stereotypes and encourage positive behavioural change and help-seeking behaviour, using cultural touch points like art, music, sport and comedy.

Updates

  • Today, with MONY Group plc and UM London, we’re launching our second Money Talks report. And the research is clear - young people are disproportionately affected by increased living costs, and it’s having a worrying impact on their mental health. In fact, young people are 77% more likely than the total population to have experienced suicidal thoughts due to issues with money or money worries. We need to do more to support young people as they enter into adulthood, especially in this challenging financial climate. This report is a vital step in understanding the pressures facing young people today, and with it we hope more individuals and organisations will be able to identify ways they can support the young people in their lives. Read the full report 👉 https://bit.ly/42btTDP Get our guide to managing money and mental health 👉 https://bit.ly/4ixXJIq Thank you so much to everyone at MoneySuperMarket and UM who helped make this happen - together, united against suicide 💚

  • Pretty big news 👇 Our pals over at MONY Group plc aren't just ace at saving money - they're pretty great at saving lives too. They've just extended our life-saving partnership for TWO years and cranked up their target to an incredible half a million quid 👏 Over the past three years we’ve helped people navigate the cost of living crisis with our campaign Money Talks, and shared important real life stories to help more people get the support they need. MONY Group has pulled out all the stops to make sure we're here for anyone struggling with life - even trekking across Cambodia to raise cash to support our services. With suicide rates at the highest they've ever been in England, and with financial hardship a key risk factor in suicidal ideation, partnerships like these are more important than ever. Together, with MONY Group, we're united against suicide 💚

''Talking about it prevents it. Hearing about hope and survival is also preventative''. It was an absolute privilege to speak with Director of Services at Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), Wendy Robinson on our podcast. This is perhaps the most emotive and powerful episode to date. The conversation centred around suicide, how we can all play a part in preventing suicide - and why this is all the more important when it comes to neurodivergent individuals. Recent research shows that ADH'D'er adults are 5 times more likely than those without to have attempted suicide (14% vs 2.7%). That rises to one in four for women with ADHD. We can no longer afford to fear talking about suicide, because it ''might put ideas in people's heads''. Beautiful backstory: you might recall that I posted about Wendy reaching out via LI, a few months ago. She asked whether I worked at a nursery 22 (ish) years ago. That was it. I melted! ''YES!'' I exclaimed! I was keyperson to her then nine-month old son (who is now studying at university😊). Serendipitous and then some! Please - do tune into episode 8 of our podcast, ‘I'm ADHD! No You're Not' tomorrow at: 🎙️ https://lnkd.in/eBSM6ciD and share far and wide. I'm also going to point you in the direction of Campaign Against Living Miserably's CARE kit (which is also on our website): https://lnkd.in/eu3QyxNY

  • "It has been my ambition for a decade now to try and write something about suicide which is somehow comforting, funny and optimistic for those left behind. I truly hope our finale of Big Boys does that, and in collaboration with CALM and Student Minds, we want to create a space to discuss how we best support those who are supporting someone else." We are beyond proud to be working with our Ambassador Jack Rooke, Channel 4 and Student Minds on a screening of the final two episodes of BIG BOYS on University Mental Health Day on Thursday 13th March. 🎓1 in 4 students would not know where to get mental health support at their university if they needed it.    🎟️Channel 4, Campaign Against Living Miserably & Student Minds to host a special screening and Q&A for the finale of BIG BOYS in London on University Mental Health Day on 13 March. Further information in the comments below.   💬Following a screening of the final two episodes, moderator Clara Amfo will be joined by a panel to discuss the issues in the finale and signpost to available support:   ● Jack Rooke, writer and creator ● Jon Pointing (Danny) ● Katy Wix (Jules) ● Dr Dominque Thompson, Clinical Advisor Student Minds ● Simon Gunning CEO of CALM ● Taj Donville-Outerbridge, Student ***Trigger Warning***   Jack Rooke, writer and creator says: “I was first affected by a suicide 10 years ago this March. I know all too well how painful it is to live in the injustice of it, with the internal rigmarole of what-ifs and the low level feelings of guilt that affect those bereaved. And it has been my ambition for a decade now to try and write something about suicide which is somehow comforting, funny and optimistic for those left behind. I truly hope our finale of Big Boys does that, and in collaboration with CALM and Student Minds, we want to create a space to discuss how we best support those who are supporting someone else. That’s vital for me and I’m honoured Channel 4 can help put a spotlight on the organisations and charities who are actually making it better, and encouraging those struggling to wait and see how life can be different and how life will always be the better choice.”   If you wish to attend this event, please register your interest here: https://lnkd.in/eWR9qujr

    • It shows two people looking at the camera with a wall dividing them as they stand in their individual university rooms. On the left standing straight on is Jon Pointing who plays Danny and then looking down the lens with his back to the wall is Dylan Llewellyn who plays Jack. This is a picture from hit comedy Big Boys.

  • “There was no mention of mental health in the 90s when I was a kid. No one mentioned that there might be a possibility of tools to deal with stress. It was just a case of ‘get on with it’.” Today - with the help of multi Olympic gold medal cyclist Bradley Wiggins and his son Ben - we’re launching Deal With It, a new tool we’ve developed to help young people learn practical skills to manage difficult emotions. Something so many of us, like Bradley, didn't have back when we needed them. Deal With It is CALM’s way of demystifying DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy), giving young people the tools to deal with all the tough moments, big emotions and stressful situations that they go through. 👀 Watch as Bradley and Ben talk about the stresses they’ve faced and how they’ve changed how they deal with it. 📲 Starting tomorrow, we'll be dropping two episodes a week over on our Instagram and TikTok, where they'll be roadtesting different skills and seeing what each help you do. Get more on Deal With It 👉 https://bit.ly/3QIMuAF Thanks to our generous supporters TP ICAP and The Roger Raymond Charitable Foundation for funding this vital project.

  • "It’s quite easy to be like, ‘Just talk and open up’. What does that actually look like in reality? That is such a difficult thing for people who are struggling." CALM Ambassador Jack Rooke's brilliant, hilarious and also heartbreaking show Big Boys is a powerful reminder of the importance of not just talking about mental health and suicide but also asking what can we do to truly support the people around us who are struggling. https://lnkd.in/eTjHne2A

  • “I find that listening to him allows me to be vulnerable, to open up when I need to most.” Sam Fender's songs don’t just help him heal - they’ve also opened up a much-needed conversation about suicide and let people know you’re not the only one who might be struggling. 💚  If you're struggling, we’re here for you. https://lnkd.in/d7d8XcZR
