  • Yesterday we launched the results of our People's Vision for R&D public dialogue project. In this video, you can hear about the project directly from some of the participants, who reflect on the process and the People's Principles for Involvement in R&D that they - along with the rest of the group - helped to collaboratively develop. You can read more about the project, the results and next steps on our website: https://lnkd.in/eHeMMRcT

  • Our Executive Director Alicia Greated was pleased to contribute to this Department for Science, Innovation and Technology look at diversity and inclusion in the science and technology sector. Alicia Greated - “An inclusive approach to science and engineering is the only way to place it at the heart of the UK’s future. We actively look to improve the diversity of voices we hear from at our events, in our policy work, and inside our organisation."

It's #NationalInclusionWeek. We asked six leaders from the science & tech sectors why diversity and inclusion matters, and what their organisation is doing about it 👇    Deborah Okenla, Founder and CEO, Your Startup, Your Story "Diverse founders often create products that work for a wider range of people, especially those who are typically left out.    We're passionate about working with startups that make hiring diverse talent a priority right from the beginning. We help build companies where inclusion isn't just an afterthought - it's part of their DNA."    Richard Deverell, Director, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew "Valuing, embedding and celebrating diversity enables us to be more creative, make better decisions and deliver better science outcomes.     Our priority is to truly embed diversity throughout our organisation: our processes, our values, our communications." Della Freeth, CEO, Science Council "For the science and tech sectors to meet the needs of the whole of society, they must draw insight from every part of society. We've developed a Diversity and Inclusion Framework for our member organisations and we champion apprenticeships & T Levels to open up scientific careers to a wider range of people.    Shri Mukundagiri, COO, Science Museum Group "Science has shown that diversity of experience and diversity of perspective help us reach the best outcomes. We aim to tell stories that speak to all visitors and grow a diverse workforce that reflects our communities"    Alicia Greated, Executive Director, Campaign for Science & Engineering  “An inclusive approach to science and engineering is the only way to place it at the heart of the UK’s future. We actively look to improve the diversity of voices we hear from at our events, in our policy work, and inside our organisation." Hannah Russell, CEO, British Science Association “Addressing the lack of diversity and inclusion in science and technology will be crucial for fostering innovation, bridging skills gaps, and creating a more equitable society. We're committed to building a workforce that values all people by eliminating bias in our recruitment practices and fostering a flexible, supportive environment.”

  • We were pleased to contribute some insights on having a local impact from our public opinions work to April Six Science & Innovation's new guide on how to communicate effectively post-election. "Two-thirds [of the public] would support a new research lab being built in their area; they want to hear more about the R&D happening near them and see R&D as an asset to their communities. This emphasises the mutual benefits of R&D investment across the UK, and it is vital R&D organisations build strong, long-lasting relationships with local communities and regional policymakers." - Ben Bleasdale   This guide explores key considerations for STEM organisations to stay relevant and further their causes in light of a new government and new policy priorities. • Not long to go until the CaSE Conference - Making R&D Matter to More People Tomorrow is set to be a fascinating day of insights and discussions as we look to build a new public-centred advocacy plan for the R&D sector. We are thrilled to have a stellar line up of speakers who will share their knowledge and experience with attendees over the course of the day. For the final session we will also be welcoming additional attendees to join us to explore the political realities of getting R&D onto the government’s agenda, through the eyes of those with first-hand experience. https://lnkd.in/gUmbDQ28

  • Today we publish the results of our People’s Vision for R&D, a public dialogue exploring society’s stake in R&D, through emotional connection and opportunities to be involved in R&D.  https://lnkd.in/eHeMMRcT  🤝 The results emphasise that the public’s emotional connection to R&D can be strengthened through the opportunity to learn more about it, and that our community’s choices can support an increased sense of public agency and ownership in R&D. 📝 The 33 participants collaboratively developed four People’s Principles for Involvement in R&D, which set out the public’s expectations and show what would increase connection with, and trust in, R&D. 💡 The opportunity for our sector is clear:  Opening up R&D, in a way that respects the People’s Principles, will not just improve R&D. It will bring more people closer to research and establish a stronger, long-lasting relationship with the public, grounded in mutual trust. This will bring benefits for research, society and individuals. ✅ CaSE has produced a set of recommendations to further embed public involvement in R&D, framed around three connected challenges - culture, capacity and resourcing - and two overarching next steps.  The dialogue was delivered by the National Centre for Social Research supported by the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) and you can read the full results, along with all CaSE's recommendations, here: https://lnkd.in/eHeMMRcT  We urge everyone to think about how they can apply the People's Principles and recommendations in their own work. CaSE will be doing the same.
