Clarke Banks Fire Engineering to Support Barking Riverside Masterplan Clarke Banks Fire Engineering is excited to announce it's involvement as Fire Engineers on the ambitious Barking Riverside Masterplan, which is set to expand to 20,000 homes, addressing the urgent demand for new housing in London. Marios Alexandrou, Technical Director at Clarke Banks Fire Engineering, stated, “We are honoured to contribute our expertise to the Barking Riverside project, a groundbreaking development that will transform the community and provide much-needed housing. Our focus will be on implementing innovative fire safety solutions to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.” The Barking Riverside Masterplan, led by Barking Riverside Limited (BRL)—a partnership between the Mayor of London and housing association L&Q—has submitted one of the UK’s largest planning applications to the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. This plan aims to double the previously permitted homes and establish London’s largest single-ownership development. Key highlights of the Barking Riverside project include: • Significant Growth: The new Outline Planning Application seeks to increase the total number of homes to 20,000, creating a vibrant community of up to 50,000 residents. • Strategic Location: Situated on 443 acres of brownfield land, larger than Hyde Park, the site was formerly home to the historic Barking Power Station and is located along the banks of the River Thames. • Infrastructure Development: Recent enhancements to transport connections, including the Barking Riverside Overground station and an Uber Boat by Thames Clippers pier, have improved accessibility to central London. Marios continued, “As we embark on this important project, our goal is to integrate cutting-edge fire engineering practices that align with the community’s needs while ensuring the highest levels of safety. We believe that a successful development must consider fire safety from the outset, and we look forward to collaborating with BRL and all stakeholders to make Barking Riverside a model for future developments.” Barking Riverside is poised to not only deliver housing but also vital community amenities, including schools, parks, and retail spaces. This development reflects the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham’s commitment to sustainable urban growth and public engagement.
This summer, BRL submitted one of the largest planning applications in the country, which could see up to 20,000 new homes delivered at Barking Riverside – potentially creating a community of up to 50,000 people. The new Outline Planning Application supports recent Government promises to instigate the largest housebuilding programme since the post war period, and also reflects the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham’s recently adopted Local Plan. London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has labelled the City Hall-backed Barking Riverside “an inspiring model for how to fix our housing crisis” and “a blueprint” for national Government to follow. The new Outline Planning Application sets out a vision to almost double the number of homes at Barking Riverside to 20,000, up from the 10,800 previously permitted. It also proposes enhanced green spaces, better connectivity in and around the neighbourhood, two additional primary schools, and better access to the River Thames. BRL has already delivered major pieces of social and physical infrastructure in the early stages of the project, including a new London Overground station with Transport for London, and an Uber Boat by Thames Clippers pier. As this application demonstrates, there is still so much more to come! We would like to thank our main shareholders, the Greater London Authority and L&Q, for supporting this historical application, as well as all its other partners. #planning #application #newhomes
