If you're looking at how much it will cost to make your business more sustainable, you are probably asking the wrong question. Yes, you could (and proabaly should) invest in tactical measures to reduce your carbon footprint - things like LED lighting, solar panels, or changing your fleet to EVs. Over time these investments will have a payback, will save you money and reduce your GHG emissions, but they won't really change your business. Here's an example of a company that's taken a more strategic approach. Embracing circular economy to rethink their business model dramatically increased their bottom line and overall value of the business. A great sustainable success story. A sustainable business isn't one that does less bad. It's one that does more good.

Why do digital devices have a bigger impact on the environment than the aviation sector? Resources. How can we reduce the impact? Simple, look after your devices, maintain and repair them instead of replacing. Keep them for longer.

💻Bridging the Digital Divide: The Effects of E-Waste and Circular Economy♻️ 🌍Read about our latest member: ReCognition Circular's mission to combat e-waste and bridge the digital divide📱 Recognition Circular are a UK based not for profit organisation, aimed at combatting digital exclusion and reducing the environmental impact of digital devices. Digital exclusion traps people in poverty and exacerbates social injustice and inequalities. The problem is bigger than many people realise, with over 1 in 4 young people (16- to 25-year-olds) in the UK having no access to a laptop or tablet at home and 20% of homes lacking Internet access. 📵🤯 Whilst some go without, others have more devices than they know what to do with. In the UK 60 devices are thrown away every second, contributing to the 1,598kt of e-waste annually.📱🗑️ To reduce the environmental impact of technology we need to rethink how we consume it. This means extending the life of our devices. Keeping devices going for longer requires skills. That is why ReCognition Circular plan to run training programmes to provide digitally excluded young people with basic digital skills, together with specific training on how to repair and refurbish IT equipment. Tech manufacturing involves complex global supply chains. Processes are resource intensive, carbon intensive, energy intensive and capital intensive. As such, the industry is a significant contributor to climate change, biodiversity loss and resource depletion. Repair and refurbishing tends to be focused on locally based services. It is skill intensive, but requires relatively little in the way of new resources, energy or capital investment. Its impact on climate change, biodiversity loss and resource depletion can be seen as positive, as it reduces demand for new production. As we move to make tech more sustainable, we are going to need more people in our local communities who are skilled in the art of repairing and renewing technology. A fantastic new initiative - get behind it!

This newsletter published last week by Cognition Cloud founder David Abosch MBA explores how repurposing end user computing devices can be a key part of an organisation's sustainability strategy, both from an environmental and financial perspective. A few key facts: 👉 A typical laptop contains around 70 of the 118 elements on the periodic table. 👉 Sourcing these elements tends to involve mining virgin metal and mineral resources. These resources are finite and are critical for the transition away from fossil fuels. 👉 Resource extraction is responsible for about of half of all GHG production globally as well as 80% of biodiversity loss. 👉 The current scale of resource extraction is unlikely to abate whilst demand for production of end user devices continues to grow. 👉 Extending the useful lifespan of IT equipment is essential to slow this demand and therefore reduce the environmental impact from IT. 👉 Repurposing end user computing equipment is an effective means of achieveing this.
