[The Big Match ⚽] On Friday, Colas launched its inaugural ‘Big Match Day’ Five-A-Side football tournament in Birmingham, part of the health and wellbeing initiative, Colas Active. The tournament presented an opportunity for everyone across the business to participate, engage, and build connections with colleagues while having fun, and competing for the title of champions. Held at Goals Star City stadium in Birmingham, thirteen teams competed before Allied (Infrastructure) FC were crowned champions, after achieving a one hundred per cent winning record ahead of reaching the final. Additionally, we were excited to have our first all-female team participate in this year's competition! This team not only provided the best goal celebrations of the tournament, but also represented a step towards greater inclusivity both within our business, and in the sport, serving as an inspiration for women across the business to get involved. Also taking part in the competition, were colleagues from Colas Ireland, who made the trip over to vie for the title. Congratulations to everybody who took part, and a special congratulations to the winners! #ColasCares #ColasActive #HealthandWellbeing

[Scheme Update] King Charles III Footpath Colas has completed improvements on the Cheshire section which will form part of the King Charles III footpath, a 2,700-mile National Trail connecting landscapes in England. In collaboration with Cheshire West and Chester Council, the project improved an existing coast path situated between the Flintshire and Wirral borders, with a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability throughout the process. The section of the path is integral to the King Charles III England Coast Path, noted for its ecological significance, as parts lie within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Burton Mere Wetlands. Following discussions with RSPB and Natural England, it was agreed that a granite stone path would be installed to stabilise the embankment to futureproof the route against coastal terrain and tidal waters. In addition, no materials would be removed from the site, aiding sustainability ecology and carbon elements of the location. The main construction phase was carefully scheduled between January and March to align with environmental considerations, with work continuing throughout the year to stabilise the route through marshy areas, raising the path above waterlogged ground, and improving drainage. With the completion of the improvements, the Cheshire section of the King Charles III footpath is now open to the public.

[Award win 🏆] Highways Awards Our award-winning 'Period Dignity: Ending the Stigma' campaign has scooped another accolade, winning the ‘Health, Wellbeing and Inclusion’ award at the 21st Highways Awards on the 24 September 2024 in London. The 'Period Dignity: Ending the Stigma' campaign aims to create an environment where women feel included, and that there is better understanding of this and other women’s physical and mental health in a highway’s workplace. The campaign is focussed on the importance of normalising conversations about gender-based health disparities, and empowering women to discuss their health openly in the workplace. Research from Initial Washroom Hygiene found that almost half of women would be hesitant to talk about periods with their manager, at Colas we’re committed to creating a healthy working environment within our business. Congratulations to the team!
