Litter kills 3 million animals each year according to Keep Britain Tidy. We're urging everyone to #LoveWhereYouLive and tackle litter for cleaner, greener spaces that allow our wildlife to thrive. Bin your rubbish, or take it home. #GBSpringClean

We're proud to support Keep Britain Tidy's annual Great British Spring Clean. Litter clearance is a year-round challenge for us. Our teams collect litter daily, and we've mobilised volunteers across the country to join this important national effort. We're also focused on influencing behaviours to prevent littering in the first place through targeted campaigns and partnerships. Last night, our CEO Nick Harris joined one of our teams on the M3 in Surrey carrying out maintenance work on the road to keep it safe and at the same time ensuring it’s clean and tidy. Vital work like this requires lane closures that can cause delays and put the safety of our people at risk whilst they work near live traffic. Every piece of litter is an unnecessary and avoidable hazard. We're also addressing another significant issue: discarded traffic management equipment – signs, A-frames, cones and sandbags left behind after roadworks. We have recovered substantial amounts of abandoned equipment. Whether it's ensuring your organisation properly manages its equipment, volunteering for a litter pick, or simply disposing of your own waste responsibly – every action counts. What steps are you taking to keep Britain tidy? #GBSpringClean

Our on-road teams need vehicles that are reliable, versatile and capable of dealing with the safety-critical work they carry out to operate our road network. At the same time, we have a commitment to achieve net zero and influence more environmentally sustainable behaviour across our organisation, supply chain and road users. As of this year, 96.7% of our 'light fleet' is ultra-low or zero emission. This includes: ➡️ 112 pool vehicles ➡️ 160 Road Inspector vehicles ➡️ 355 Traffic Officer vehicles

🚂 Supporting safety and community engagement: Our Historical Railway Estate team recently accompanied AmcoGiffen to deliver an educational session at St Augustine's CE Primary School in Greater Manchester about nearby Clifton Hall Tunnel and our ongoing safety work. 🏗️ National Highways has been responsible for this Victorian railway structure since 2013, conducting regular safety inspections. Our current project involves filling 30 metres of remaining voids to maintain structural integrity - work that AmcoGiffen expertly explained to curious pupils. 🌿 The contractors demonstrated the safety maintenance process and also transformed St Augustine's Peace Garden and early years playground with new artificial grass, painted planters and a beautiful arbour. While the tunnel's history includes a tragic collapse in 1953 that led to its closure, our focus today is ensuring ongoing safety for local residents for years to come.

We've contributed £700k towards the Chippenham Pit Stop project using our Lorry Parking Facilities Improvement Fund. There is now an additional 63 lorry parking spaces, an expanded restaurant and improved shower and toilet facilities for both men and women. Our improvement fund is a match-funded initiative to address key issues that HGV drivers face, such as limited parking, inadequate facilities and security concerns. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/enkhGRSN
