I was unprofessional, and I was 🤗welcome 🤗. I showed up at a client’s house on a Sunday morning after camping nearby – looking a little dishevelled and smelling of campfire – knowing they’d welcome me in. This is psychological safety in action. This is Anni Townend. Anni is the co-founder of Collaboration Equation alongside Lucy Kidd. It all starts with a conversation. This is one of the key messages from day one of the d&i Leaders (Diversity and Inclusion Leaders) Global Forum. All of the speakers encouraged conversation and connection leading to greater collaboration. We had a great two days learning from other leaders who are leading and creating cultures of care and connection in which people feel seen, heard and understood. Many of the speakers spoke about Inclusive Leadership and the importance of listening, of having conversations that help us all learn about our differences so we can truly include each other, and contribute to each other's learning. Collaboration Equation we have found that people who bring a mindset of Curiosity, Care and Courage to their leadership are Inclusive Leaders - their behaviours include deep listening to learn, asking questions of themselves and others, being courageous in their sharing, not knowing and asking for help. Our Collaboration Equation starts with Psychological Safety the first and most critical building block in creating an Inclusive and Collaborative Culture. People can only speak up, and truly listen to others, ask questions and acknowledge each other when they feel safe.
