Always great to visit a past scheme, particularly to take in the sanctuary and decompression of our rework of the Japanese Garden at UCL’s Student Services Building in Bloomsbury with Nicholas Hare Architects. I’ve never seen it not being used.

All of our projects are placed in highly accurate context models that stretch as far as the eye can see. We do this predominately to assess the visual impact of proposals but it also allows us to see the views out from the building into the wider landscape. It’s a day for good news! Delighted with this result for Castles & Coasts - we provided LVIA and design support for this much needed scheme in Brampton. Great team effort.
Our development for affordable housing in Brampton, Cumbria was unanimously approved at planning committee yesterday! Subject to entering into a section 106 agreement, the development of 60 much needed, low-cost, affordable homes will be brought forward on land to the south of Greenhill at Brampton in Cumbria. Exciting times for Blyth - really happy that we have been able to support the development of proposals for such a transformative scheme alongside a great project team
Yesterday, Blyth residents and businesses were invited to see the latest plans for the Energy Central Institute (ECI), a new higher-level skills and innovation facility in Blyth town centre. The ECI will be located on the site of the former Keel Row Shopping Centre. The project is set to start construction in 2025 and be completed in 2027. The project is part of the £95m Energising Blyth regeneration Programme to grow, renew and connect the town. The programme is delivered by Northumberland County Council with funding support from UK Government, Northumberland County Council and the North East Combined Authority. Construction for the new Bedworth Physical Activity Hub is officially underway! With our collaboration with BAM as the main contractor, the Sport England supported facility will be a game changer for the community, providing health and wellness opportunities. Over the next 18-24 months, this project will be a key asset to the local area upon completion, enhancing access to sports and physical activities for everyone. * * * I NEED ALL YOUR HELP * * * As some of you are aware I was out in Nepal climbing Lebouche Peak, next to Everest, over the last month. It was a fantastic experience but on our final ascent a severe weather front came in. Little did we know that this would be the heaviest monsoon rains in two decades and would eventually kill over 200 people. Below photographs shows the devastation of flash floods, entire footpaths swept away and an airport underwater. As a result I’m teaming up with Ian Taylor Trekking (my mountaineer guide) to rise money to build a medical center which will cater for the Village of Goli and surrounding area. These are some of the most humble, hardworking and content people I have ever met and they really do need your help. Whatever you can spare would help more than you know. Navigating BNG - assets or a pain in the… ? It’s was a fascinating day this week with Sport England and framework providers sharing, exploring and discussing BNG experiences, requirements and its implications on the delivery of sport and leisure infrastructure in England. Naturally avoiding basic issues such as leaf fall on pitches is essential but working closely with the natural assets of any site has to be the best way forward and can lead to so many additional benefits for a development and its users such as creating a sense of wellbeing, minimising drainage outflows, solar shading, reducing solar gain where it’s not welcome and reduced maintenance inputs in comparison with traditional landscape (albeit with longer requirements) and appealing settings for external activities etc etc… as well as the intended ecological benefits. Illustrating this from before the days of formal BNG and as part of the master planning process at RIBA Stages 1 and 2, it is clear from the above image of the Chiltern Lifestyle Centre in Amersham how working with nature can add a magical quality to the internal active environment. Bravo to Justin O’Brien, Paul Clayton and the Space and Place design team along with Amersham Council and PM Richard Thompson, Hadron for embracing this for the building concept, orientation and internal planning. External activities also surround the facility, relating strongly to the adjacent George V Recreation Ground and town centre. Big thank you amongst many to Andy Bateman, Sport England for expertly and wittily chairing the session on Monday, Mark Thomas, Space and Place for the invitation to present, Andy Mytom, David Morley Architects for including Colour in their team and Roberts Limbrick Architects for their hospitality in lovely Gloucester.
